Cian Galvin
Cian Galvin (born 2002) is an Irish hurler who plays for Clare Senior Championship club Clarecastle and at inter-county level with the Clare senior hurling team. Career A member of the Clarecastle club, Galvin first came to hurling prominence as a schoolboy with St. Flannan's College in Ennis, who he captained to the Harty Cup title in 2020. He made his first appearance on the inter-county scene as a member of the Clare minor hurling team and captained the team in the 2019 Munster MHC final defeat by Limerick. Galvin ended the season by being named on the Minor Hurling Team of the Year. He progressed onto the Clare under-20 team before being selected for the Clare senior hurling team in 2021. Fitzgibbon Cup
The Fitzgibbon Cup () is the trophy for the premier hurling championship among higher education institutions (universities, colleges and institutes of technology) in Ireland. The Fitzgibbon Cup competition is administered by Comhairle Ard Oideachais Cumann Lúthchleas Gael (CLG), the GAA's Higher Education Council. Comhairle Ard Oideachais also oversees the Ryan Cup (tier 2 hurling championship), the Fergal Maher Cup (tier 3 hurling championship) and the Padraig MacDiarmada (tier 4 hurling championship). The GAA Higher Education Cups are sponsored by Electric Ireland. History The cup is named after Dr. Edwin Fitzgibbon, a Capuchin friar and, from 1911 to 1936, who was Professor of Philosophy at University College Cork. Clarecastle Hurlers
Clarecastle (''An Clár'' or ) is a village just south of Ennis in County Clare, Ireland. Name The town is named after the Clare Castle, which stands on an island in the narrowest navigable part of the River Fergus. The Irish ''Clár'', meaning a wooden board, is often used for a bridge. The name probably originated as ''Clár adar da choradh'', which means "the bridge between two weirs". Another explanation of the name is that the de Clare family gave the castle its name, since they had acquired land in Kilkenny and Thomond that included the castle. In 1590 County Clare was named after the castle, which is in a strategic location. Clarecastle (Clare Abbey) is a parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Killaloe. The 2024 National Hurling League (NHL), known for sponsorship reasons as the Allianz Hurling League (AHL), was the 93rd season of the National Hurling League, an annual hurling competition held in Ireland for GAA County, county teams. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into five divisions, with seven teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league. 2024 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 2024 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) was the 137th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county hurling tournament, since its establishment in 1887. The 2024 championship began with provincial tournaments in April and ended with the All-Ireland Final on 21 July. Limerick entered the competition as the defending champion, having won the previous four titles. They were attempting to become the first team in history to win five-in-a-row, a feat never achieved in hurling. This had previously been attempted by Cork in 1945 and Kilkenny in 2010, both thwarted by Tipperary. The final was played on 21 July 2024 at Croke Park in Dublin, between Clare and Cork.
