Chuck Smead
Charles Smead (born August 4, 1951) is an American long-distance runner, who made his mark on the sport by taking second in the Marathon at the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico City. Originally from Santa Paula High School in Santa Paula, California, where he was an outstanding two-miler, taking second place at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational in 1968. He continued to excel in long distance at Humboldt State University, where he won the NCAA Division II 6 mile/10000 metre Championship twice. In 1972 he began a string of three straight wins in the famous Pikes Peak Marathon, he added a fourth victory in 1976. He has completed the race six times, the most recent as a 57-year-old. Mount Washington Road Race
The Mount Washington Road Race is a road running event that follows the Mount Washington Auto Road, auto road going from the base of Mount Washington (New Hampshire), Mount Washington in New Hampshire nearly to the mountain's summit (located at above sea level). The race was first held in 1936, and has been run annually since 1966. Women first participated officially in 1972. The race course rises feet from start to finish. It is a steep mountain course with an average grade of 12%, all uphill after the first few hundred yards. Held in June each year, Mount Washington is a popular race for runners in New England, and also attracts many running, runners from other parts of the United States and the world. For non-elite runners, entry is by lottery. The lottery winners are able to be among the approximately 1,100 runners who partake in this annual event. The National Senior Games (Senior Olympics) are a sports competition for senior citizens in the United States. It is conducted by the National Senior Games Association (NSGA) once every two years. Akin to the Summer Olympics, it is a multi-sport event devoted to adults above the age of 50. It consists of regional competitions held yearly in all states of the US.
