Chris Clark (singer)
Christine Elizabeth Clark (born February 1, 1946), better known as Chris Clark, is an American soul, jazz, and blues singer, who recorded for Motown Records. Clark became known to Northern soul fans for hit songs such as 1965's "Do Right Baby Do Right" (by Berry Gordy) and 1966's "Love's Gone Bad" ( Holland-Dozier-Holland). She later co-wrote the screenplay for the 1972 motion picture '' Lady Sings the Blues'' starring Diana Ross, which earned Clark an Academy Award nomination. Biography Clark was born in Santa Cruz, California. Clark produced a song on Motown's subsidiary label "V.I.P." with "Love's Gone Bad", which reached #105 Pop, and #41 R&B in the U.S. in 1966. In Canada, the song made it to #95 on the ''RPM'' 100. In 1967, Clark released her first album entitled '' Soul Sounds'' on the Motown label. "Whisper You Love Me Boy" is a song written and composed by Holland–Dozier–Holland and recorded by at least three Motown female acts: early Motown star Mary Wells, popular Motown singing group The Supremes and blue-eyed soul Motown label mate Chris Clark in 1964, 1965 and 1967 respectively. Song information The song was first scheduled to be released as a single in 1964 by Mary Wells as the proposed follow-up to Wells' popular "My Guy" (catalogue # M-1056), but the singer was embroiled in a controversial lawsuit with Motown arguing for release from the label. Because of her abrupt exit from Motown in 1965, her version of the single was shelved for release. "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)" is a song and single by American soul singer Frank Wilson first pressed in 1965 on the Motown subsidiary label Soul. It is Wilson's only Motown single and is a prized item among collectors. Record history Approximately 250 demo 45s of the song were pressed in 1965 and scheduled for release on 23 December 1965. Owing to a combination of Wilson deciding that he would rather focus on producing and Motown's Berry Gordy's lukewarm reception of the vocals and wish to prevent his producers from having a successful recording career, the demos were destroyed. At least two, and maybe as many as five, copies survived, one of which fetched £25,742 in April 2009. One is rumoured to be owned by Berry Gordy. Ernest Ralph Tidyman (January 1, 1928 – July 14, 1984) was an American author and screenwriter, best known for his novels featuring the African-American detective John Shaft. His screenplay for '' The French Connection'' garnered him an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as a Golden Globe Award, a Writers Guild of America Award, and an Edgar Award. In 1971, he also co-wrote the screenplay for the film version of '' Shaft'' with John D. F. Black. Early life Tidyman was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Kathryn (Kascsak) and Benjamin Ralph Tidyman, a crime reporter for ''The Plain Dealer''. He was of Hungarian and British descent.
