Cheryl Lau (born July 4, 1944) is an American former politician who served as the first Asian-American Republican Secretary of State of Nevada. Rather than seek re-election, she ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for the Nevada gubernatorial election, 1994, losing to Jim Gibbons (American politician), Jim Gibbons. The secretary of state of Nevada is a statewide elected office in the State of Nevada. The secretary of state post is common to many U.S. states. In Nevada, it is a constitutional office (i.e., it is mandated by the Constitution of Nevada). The current secretary of state, Democrat Cisco Aguilar, was elected in 2022. Robert Joseph Miller (born March 30, 1945) is an American former attorney and politician who served as the 26th governor of Nevada from 1989 to 1999. A member of the Democratic Party, he is Nevada's longest-serving governor. As of , he is the last Democratic governor to be reelected, and is the most recent Nevada governor to have a lieutenant governor from the opposing party, having served with Republicans Sue Wagner and Lonnie Hammargren. Jim Gibbons (American Politician)
James Arthur Gibbons (born December 16, 1944) is an American attorney, aviator, geologist, hydrologist and politician who was the 28th Governor of Nevada from 2007 to 2011. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as the U.S. representative for Nevada's 2nd congressional district from 1997 to 2006. Following his service in the United States Air Force, Gibbons served as vice commander of the Nevada National Guard from 1990 to 1996. He unsuccessfully ran for governor of Nevada in 1994, losing to incumbent Bob Miller. Two years later he successfully ran for the House of Representatives, where he represented Nevada's 2nd congressional district from 1997 to 2006. Gibbons again ran for governor in 2006, defeating Democratic nominee Dina Titus in the election. Gibbons' term as governor was dominated by the Great Recession, which hit Nevada particularly hard.
