Chaturbhuj Doshi
Chaturbhuj Doshi (1894–1969) was a Hindi and Gujarati language, Gujarati writer-director of Indian cinema. He was one of the top Gujarati screenplay writers, who helped script stories for the Punatar productions. He is stated to be one of the leading figures who launched the Gujarati film industry with work on notable films like ''Gunsundari (1948 film), Gunsundari'' (1948) and ''Nanand Bhojai'' (1948). Doshi, was “well known” for his family socials and had become “a celebrity in his own right”. He made a name for himself as a journalist initially and was referred to as the "famous journalist" and publicist by Baburao Patel, editor of ''Filmindia''. His debut film as a director was ''Gorakh Aya'' (1938), produced by Ranjit Studios, Ranjit Movietone, though he joined Ranjit in 1929, as a scriptwriter. Filmindia
''filmindia'' is an Indian monthly magazine covering Indian cinema and published in English language. Started by Baburao Patel in 1935, ''filmindia'' was the first English film periodical to be published from Bombay. The magazine was reportedly run "single-handedly" by Patel, who wielded power through this medium to "make or destroy a film". Its most popular column was "The Editor's Mail" answered by Patel. The magazine featured film news, editorials, studio round-ups, gossip, and reviews of different language films, mainly from Hindi and regional cinema and affiliated reviews from Hollywood. His articles included siding with the lesser known cinema workers like the technicians, extras and stuntmen. Patel met the painter S. M. Pandit around 1938, and asked him to design the covers for ''filmindia''. One of Pandit's assistants, Raghubir Mulgaonkar, was also a designer in the same periodical. Gunvantrai Popatbhai Acharya (9 September 1900 – 25 November 1965) was a Gujarati language novelist and journalist from India. His experience with seafarers impacted his adventure and novel writings. His works include several historical fiction novels. Biography Acharya was born on 9 September 1900 in Jetalsar, Gujarat, India. He completed his school education from Mandvi, Kutch where he came in contact with seafarers. His father Popatbhai was in police department. He joined college but dropped out after a brief period. He joined ''Saurashtramitra'' daily in 1927. He was also associated with several news dailies like ''Saurashtra'', ''Phulchhab'', ''Prajabandhu'' and ''Gujarat Samachar''. ''Vadilona Vanke'' () is 1948 Indian Gujarati social drama film directed by Ramchandra Thakur. Plot The story revolves around conflict of rights and ambitions in a joint family. Snehgopal, a retired dewan has two daughters: elder Samata who is married to imprisoned political activist Pushkar, and younger Shobhna is married to modernised and aimless Kirtikumar. Harji Lavji Damani, better known by his pen name Shayda (24 October 1892 – 31 May 1962) was a Gujarati language poet, novelist, short-story writer and playwright from Gujarat, India. He is known as ''Ghazal Samrat'', the king of ghazal poetry, as he established the Gujarati ghazal form in Gujarati literature. Biography Damani was born on 24 October 1892 in Pipli, a village near Dhandhuka, Gujarat to Lavjibhai and Santokbahen. His family belonged to the Islamic Khoja Shia Ishna Asheri community. ''Kariyavar'' is 1948 Indian Gujarati film written and directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. It was produced by Chimanlal Desai under banner of Sagar Movietone. It was based on the story by Shayda which itself was based on a folklore of a stepwell. The soundtrack was composed by Ajit Merchant. Plot In a village, there was a challenge that whoever reach into a pot housing a venomous cobra would have the privilege of installing an idol in a temple. Khemchand Prakash (12 December 1907 – 10 August 1950) was a music composer in the Hindi film industry. He had few peers in 1940s, the decade for Indian film music which started with Saigal very active on the scene and ended with Lata Mangeshkar firmly established in the industry. Khursheed Bano (14 April 1914 – 18 April 2001), often credited as Khursheed or Khurshid, was a singer and actress, and a pioneer of the Indian cinema. Her career ran through the 1930s and 1940s, before she migrated to Pakistan in 1948. Making her debut with ''Laila Majnu'' (1931), she acted in over thirty films in India.
