Charles Fish
Charles Everett Fish (May 26, 1854 – October 23, 1916) was an American educator and the sixth principal of Phillips Exeter Academy. Fish was born in Cotuit, Massachusetts, on May 26, 1854, to John C. and Lavarah Fish. He attended school at Exeter's rival Phillips Academy Andover, then entered Harvard College, as a member of the class of 1878. However, in order to raise money for his sister's education, he left after his freshman year to become the principal of Edward Little High School, in Auburn, Maine, returning to Harvard in 1879 to graduate in 1880. Following his graduation, he became the principal of Chicopee High School in Chicopee, Massachusetts, for five years. He then opened a private all-boys private school in Worcester, Massachusetts, before being elected in 1890 as the principal of Exeter, based on the recommendations of his former students' parents. Phillips Exeter Academy (often called Exeter or PEA) is an Independent school, independent, co-educational, college-preparatory school in Exeter, New Hampshire. Established in 1781, it is America's sixth-oldest boarding school and educates an estimated 1,100 boarding and day students in grades 9 to 12, as well as postgraduate year, postgraduate students. Gideon Lane Soule
Gideon Lane Soule ( ; July 25, 1796 – May 28, 1879) was an American educator, and the third List of Phillips Exeter Academy Principals, principal of Phillips Exeter Academy. Soule was born in Freeport, Maine, in 1796 to Moses and Martha Soule. He was descended from George Soule (Mayflower passenger), George Soule, a Mayflower passenger, and John Wheelwright, the founder of the town of Exeter, New Hampshire. At a young age, he left school to work as an errand boy for Jacob Abbot, who helped him attain admission to Phillips Exeter Academy, Phillips Exeter in 1813. After three years, he entered Bowdoin College, graduating in 1818. He taught at Exeter for a year as an assistant teacher, then left. He returned in 1822, as a permanent instructor in classical language. In 1838, he replaced Benjamin Abbot as principal of Exeter. He resigned as principal in 1873 citing old age as his reason.
