Ceylon Indian Congress
The Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC) (; ''Lanka Kamkaru Kongrasaya'') is a political party in Sri Lanka that has traditionally represented Sri Lanka Tamils (Indian origin), Sri Lankan Tamils of Indian origin working in the plantation sector of the economy. __TOC__ History The CWC was formed by Peri Sundaram and G. R. Motha as an Indian Estates Workers Trade Union in 1950. It was an outgrowth of the Ceylon Indian Congress (CIC), formed 15 July 1939. In 1950 the CIC changed its name to the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) and became the largest trade union in the country. Another trade union, the Democratic Workers Congress (DWC), was formed in 1956 as a breakaway faction of the CWC as a result of leadership rivalries between the president, S. Thondaman, and the general secretary Abdul Aziz (Sri Lankan politician), A. Aziz. The former retained control of the CWC to date. Senthil Thondaman
Senthil Thondaman is a Sri Lankan politician. He was the List of governors of Eastern Province, Governor of the Eastern Province. Thondaman was the leader of the Ceylon Workers' Congress, prior to his appointment as Governor. Peri Sundaram
Peri Sundaram (July 23, 1890 – February 4, 1957), born Periannan Sundaram, was a Ceylonese lawyer, trade unionist and politician. He was the first Minister of Labour Industries and Commerce in the State Council of Ceylon and Deputy President of the Senate of Ceylon. Educated at Trinity College, Kandy and at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, he entered the Ceylon Law College. Thereafter he went on to the University of Cambridge graduating with an MA and LLB. At Cambridge, he was the President of the Cambridge Indian Majlis and committee member of the Cambridge Union Society. In 1916 he became a barrister and thereafter on his return he became an advocate of the Supreme Court of Ceylon. He was a lecturer and acting principal of the Ceylon Law College and served as examiner in law to the Ceylon Civil Service. Donoughmore Constitution
The Donoughmore Constitution (; ), created by the Donoughmore Commission, served Sri Lanka (Ceylon) from 1931 to 1947 when it was replaced by the Soulbury Constitution. It was a significant development. First, it was the only constitution in the British Empire (outside Dominions of Australia, South Africa and Canada) enabling general elections with adult universal suffrage. For the first time, a "dependent", non-caucasian country within the empires of Western Europe was given one-person, one-vote and the power to control domestic affairs. Here was the pilot project whose success would ensure freedom from colonial rule for whole swathes of Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Arunachalam Ponnambalam
Gate Mudaliyar Arunachalam Ponnambalam, JP, UM (1814 – 4 September 1887) was a Ceylonese colonial-era government functionary, businessman and philanthropist. He was the cashier at the Colombo Kachcheri and was appointed to the titular rank of Gate Mudaliyar. Early life and family Ponnambalam was born in 1814 in Manipay in northern Ceylon. He was the son of Arunachalam and Thangam. Through his paternal line Ponnambalam is believed to be a descendant of Mana Mudaliyar of Thondai Nadu, one of the pioneer settlers of Jaffna peninsula in the late 15th century. Ponnambalam's father died when he was an infant and his mother married Ariyaputhira. In 1830, aged 16, Ponnambalam was sent to Colombo to live with Gate Mudaliyar A. United National Party
The United National Party (UNP; , ) is a Centre-right politics, centre-right political party in Sri Lanka. Founded in 1946, the party was one of Sri Lanka's two main parties for several decades. The UNP has served as the country's ruling party, or as part of its governing coalition, during the periods 1947–1956, 1965–1970, 1977–1994, 2001–2004, 2015–2019, and 2022–2024.
