Cardioprotection includes all mechanisms and means that contribute to the preservation of the heart by reducing or even preventing myocardial damage. Mechanisms Cardioprotection encompasses several regimens that have shown to preserve function and viability of cardiac muscle cell tissue subjected to ischemic insult or reoxygenation. Cardioprotection includes strategies that are implemented: * before an ischemic event (preconditioning, PC), * during an ischemic event (perconditioning, PerC), * after the event and during reperfusion (postconditioning, PostC). PRKCE
Protein kinase C epsilon type (PKCε) is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the ''PRKCE'' gene. PKCε is an isoform of the large PKC family of protein kinases that play many roles in different tissues. In cardiac muscle cells, PKCε regulates muscle contraction through its actions at sarcomeric proteins, and PKCε modulates cardiac cell metabolism through its actions at mitochondria. Mitochondrial Permeability Transition Pore
The mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP or MPTP; also referred to as PTP, mTP, or MTP) is a protein pore complex that forms in the inner mitochondrial membrane under certain pathological conditions such as traumatic brain injury, ischemia, and stroke. Opening of the pore causes an increase in the permeability of the mitochondrial membrane to solutes with a molecular mass less than 1,500 daltons, leading to loss of membrane potential, swelling of the organelle, rupture of the outer membrane, and eventual cell death. The mPTP is thought to be regulated by multiple mitochondrial proteins. Historically, Cyclophilin D and the TSPO (formerly the peripheral benzodiazepine receptor) have been considered central components. Hsp90 (heat shock protein 90) is a chaperone protein that assists other proteins to fold properly, stabilizes proteins against heat stress, and aids in protein degradation.
