Capital Punishment In The Gambia
Capital punishment remains a legal penalty for multiple crimes in The Gambia. However, the country has taken recent steps towards abolishing the capital punishment, death penalty. Execution methods Under Gambian law, hanging and the firing squad are both permitted methods for carrying out executions. The Minister of Justice is tasked with deciding which method would be used in each execution. The Gambian Criminal Code historically called for executions to take place by hanging, and human rights organization Amnesty International published a 1989 document titled ''When the State Kills'' in which they identified hanging as Gambia's sole method of execution. However, in 2012, Gambia allegedly carried out nine executions by lethal injection. The African Union (AU) is a continental union of 55 member states located on the continent of Africa. Serrekunda
Serekunda (or Serrekunda; ) is a major city and the largest metropolitan area in The Gambia. It is situated close to the Atlantic coast, on the Gambia River, near the capital, Banjul. Serekunda and Banjul form an urban area known as the Kombos, with about half of the population of the Gambia. Serekunda was named for Sayerr Jobe, who founded it in the 19th century. It merged with several villages into a larger urban area. Banjul's growth has been restricted due to being a small island, leading to Serekunda growing in population and businesses moving there from Banjul. Serekunda has been the site of political protests, and candidates from several parties have won seats. Since the 1980s, Serekunda has been a regional centre of the Tablighi Jamaat religious movement. Mile 2 Prison is a penal institution in the West African country of The Gambia that is located on the highway between Serrekunda and the capital city of Banjul, across the road from a military barracks. Officially known as Central State Prison, the facility is notorious for its harsh conditions, torture by guards, and its use in holding political opponents of former President Yahya Jammeh. Opened in 1920 by British colonial authorities, the prison contains a 'remand wing' where juvenile offenders and those awaiting trial are held, and a 'security wing' which houses high security prisoners, including those on death row, political prisoners, and other convicted inmates.
