The canton of Pertuis is a French administrative division in the department of Vaucluse and region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Pertuis
Pertuis (; oc, Pertús) is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. Located south of the Luberon, this town is also near Aix-en-Provence, a famous town. Pertuis has existed since at least 981, while a castle was first built in the 12th century. Villelaure
Villelaure (; oc, Vilalaura) is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. History The village takes its name from the Roman-era settlement of ''Villa Laura'' which was at the same location or nearby. Since Roman times, a nucleus of inhabitants lived near the present village. However, like all the southern Luberon, Villelaure and its region were completely ruined in the second half of the 14th century by the ravages of the Hundred Years War and the Black Death. Villelaure is one of about forty localities, on both sides of the Luberon, in which at least 1,400 families from the alpine valleys of Piedmont and approximately 6,000 people came from the alpine dioceses of Turin and Embrun between 1460 and 1560. In 1512, Antoinette de la Terre, assisted by her husband Jean de Forbin, established Villelaure with 19 families from the neighboring villages and Piedmont. La Tour-d'Aigues
La Tour-d'Aigues (; oc, La Torre d'Egues) is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. Geography The town is located at the south of the Grand Luberon, away from Pertuis. It is the capital town of the Pays d'Aigues. Climate La Tour d'Aigues is under the influence of the mediterranean climate characterised by hot and dry summers and mild winters. History Middle Ages The town belonged to the counts of Forcalquier until the end of the 12th century, when it passed to the Sabran family through marriage, and later to the Agoults. La Tour d'Aigues was partly destroyed in 1390 when facing the assault of Raymond VIII de Turenne. In addition to this, epidemics emptied the town of its population. This crisis allowed Fouquet d'Agoult to acquire new territories: le Tourel, la Bastidonne, Saint-Martin-de-la-Brasque and Cabrière d'Aigues. La Motte-d'Aigues (; oc, La Mota d'Aigas) is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. Geography La Motte-d'Aigues is situated in the southern part of the Parc naturel régional du Luberon between the crest of the Grand Luberon and the hills bordering the Eze river. Etymology Motte is a piece of detached land. Aigue describes something that terminates in a point or has been cut away. NOTE: that explanation is incorrect. Mirabeau, Vaucluse
Mirabeau (; oc, Mirabèu) is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. It has several buildings from the 13th century in the centre, including the Chapelle Sainte-Madeleine. Geography The commune is situated at the exit of the water gap opened by the Durance (a tributary of the Rhone) in the limestone plateau that since the Middle Ages has been called the plateau of Saint-Sépulcre. The water gap of Mirabeau is used as a crossing the Durance, which for most of its length is wide and rapid. The village is situated between the communes of Pertuis and Manosque at a place where four departments meet:Vaucluse, Bouches-du-Rhône, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Var. Beaumont-de-Pertuis
Beaumont-de-Pertuis (, literally ''Beaumont of Pertuis''; oc, Bèumont de Pertús) is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. Beaumont de Pertuis is a small village situated in the Parc Naturel du Luberon on the border of the Alpes de Haute Provence, the Var and the Bouches du Rhone. A busy road once ran through the middle of Beaumont de Pertuis which was at the time a prosperous medieval market town. In the 14th century, Beaumont could boast more than 1,000 inhabitants and belonged to one of the largest communes in France. The first reference to Beaumont (Baùmoun, which means "cave" in Provençal dialect) dates back to 1079, a reference to the cave of Eucherius of Lyon. Before becoming archbishop this hermit went on retreat in a cave overhanging la Durance in the town of Beaumont de Pertuis. French Canton
The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the French Republic's departments and arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments ( departmental councils, formerly general councils).
