Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand in the early to mid-1980s. Although the term was originally used to describe rock music released through independent record labels, by the 1990s it became more widely associated with the music such bands produced. Robert Pollard
Robert Ellsworth Pollard Jr. (born October 31, 1957) is an American singer and songwriter. He is the frontman and leader of indie rock band Guided by Voices, which he also the band’s only constant member. In addition to this, he has also released 22 solo albums. He has nearly 3,000 songs registered to his name with Broadcast Music, Inc., BMI. In 2006, ''Paste Magazine, Paste'' magazine listed him as the 78th-greatest living songwriter. Mac McCaughan
Ralph Lee "Mac" McCaughan (; born July 12, 1967) is an American musician and record label owner, based in North Carolina. His main musical projects have been Superchunk since 1989 and Portastatic since the early 1990s. In 1989 he founded the independent record label Merge Records with Superchunk bandmate Laura Ballance. Musical history As a child, McCaughan adored the classic rock of bands such as AC/DC and the Rolling Stones. In his teens, he was impacted by synthesizer-driven acts like New Order, OMD and Cocteau Twins. Other prominent influences have included R.E.M., Let's Active, Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth and Minutemen. McCaughan is a founding member of the rock band Superchunk. Formed in 1989, they are one of the bands that helped define the Chapel Hill music scene of the 1990s.
