Politics The ruling party, SWAPO, and the new opposition party, Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) contested the first town council election in Omuthiya in the Oshikoto Region. On 24 April, a rally of 200 took place in Windhoek against the porting of the Chinese ship the '' An Yue Jiang'' at Walvis Bay. In May 2008, Ignatius Shixwameni, a former SWAPO and Congress of Democrats (CoD) member, who split from CoD in December 2007, forms the All People's Party. In June 2008, the Democratic Party of Namibia was formed in ǁKaras Region. Though the CoD's Ben Ulenga criticized the party and others as "tribal", the DPN rejected the sentiment. Ignatius Shixwameni
Ignatius Nkotongo Shixwameni (4 September 1966 – 10 November 2021) was a Namibian politician. He was the leader of Namibia's All People's Party. Life Shixwameni was born in Shambyu, the traditional kingdom in the Kavango Region, and he earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Havana in Social Sciences. Shixwameni was a student leader of the Namibia National Students Organisation (Nanso) at the dawn of independence, a SWAPO Youth League leader from 1987 to 1999 and a SWAPO Central Committee member from 1992 to 1997. Elected to Parliament in 1999 as a member of the party, he joined the opposition Congress of Democrats (CoD) in 2000 as its chief whip. Shixwameni resigned from the Congress of Democrats in December 2007, along with 21 other members. He founded a new party, the All People's Party, as a split from the Congress of Democrats the next month. In October 2009, the APP selected him as the party's candidate for president. Miss Namibia
Miss Namibia is a national beauty pageant in Namibia. The winner represents Namibia at Miss Universe pageant. The organization of Miss Namibia has produced one Miss Universe. Michelle McLean was crowned Miss Universe 1992, and became the first Namibian woman to win the title. McLean had been crowned Miss Namibia 1991 before Miss Universe, and also placed as the fourth runner-up at Miss World 1991. History The first Miss Namibia contest was held in 1980 by Nic Kruger, the founder of the pageant. After that there are three national directors: Nic Kruger (1980–1996), Danie Botes (1997–1998) and Conny Maritz (1999–today). The first Miss Namibia was organised by the Afrikaans newspaper '' Die Republikein'' in 1980 and conducted by Nic Kruger, the founding director of the pageant. The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) is one of the most powerful of Namibia's trade unions. It plays a leading public role in the Namibian political space and is an ally of the ruling South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) government. The MUN was established in 1986. Rosh Pinah
Rosh Pinah is a mining town located in southern Namibia, close to the border with South Africa. It is situated south of Keetmanshoop in Namibia's ǁKaras Region. West of the town lies Diamond Area 1, the main diamond mining area of Namibia. Rosh Pinah belongs to the Oranjemund electoral constituency. The town is connected via road to Aus and Oranjemund. Copper was discovered here in the 1920s, and German-born Jew Mose Kohan discovered zinc in the nearby Hunz Mountains in 1963. Skorpion Zinc
Skorpion Zinc is a zinc mine in the ǁKaras Region of southern Namibia, producing Special High Grade (SHG) zinc. The mine is situated near Rosh Pinah. It was established at a cost of US$450 million by Anglo American in 2003. It is the tenth-largest zinc mine in the world, and the largest employer in Rosh Pinah, providing 1,900 jobs. Skorpion is a unique mine in several ways. Firstly, it is a supergene zinc ore body composed of alluvial accumulations of zinc carbonate and silicate minerals of detrital nature deposited within a palaeochannel. There are no other currently commercially viable deposits of this type. It is also one of the few mines in the world that currently mines zinc oxides, a mixture of non-sulphidic zinc minerals such as smithsonite, hydrozincite, tarbuttite and willemite. ǁKaras Region
The ǁKharas Region (pronounced , with a lateral click, former name Karas Region, without the click) is the southernmost, largest, and least densely populated of the 14 regions of Namibia; its capital is Keetmanshoop. The name assigned to the region reflects the prominence of the Karas mountain range in its southern part. The ǁKharas region contains the municipality of Keetmanshoop, the towns Karasburg, Lüderitz and Oranjemund, and the self-governed villages Aroab, Berseba, Bethanie, Koës and Tses. ǁKharas' western border is the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Its location in Namibia's south means that it shares a long border in the south and east with the Northern Cape Province of South Africa.
