Bryan, Texas
Bryan is a city and the seat of government of Brazos County, Texas, United States. It is located in the heart of the Brazos Valley (East and Central Texas). As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 83,980. Bryan borders the city of College Station, which lies to its south. Together they are referred to as the Bryan–College Station metropolitan area, which has a population of more than 250,069. History The area around Bryan was part of a land grant to Moses Austin by Spain. Austin's son, Stephen F. Austin, helped bring settlers to the area. Among the settlers was William Joel Bryan, the nephew of Stephen Austin. In 1866 the county seat of Brazos County was changed from Boonville to Bryan, and a post office was opened. In 1867, after many delays caused by the Civil War, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad, which had only previously gotten as far as Millican, finally reached Bryan. Millican, Texas
Millican is an unincorporated area and former municipality in Brazos County, Texas, United States. The population was 240 at the 2010 census, up from 108 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bryan–College Station metropolitan area. Millican is named after Robert Millican, the first white settler of the region that would come to be known as Brazos County. History The community was formerly an incorporated municipality. A letter sent to Greg Abbott, then the Texas Attorney General, from the Brazos County Attorney, Jim Kuboviak, stated that an either an election of 1866 or a " special act" law passed by the Texas Legislature had incorporated Millican as a municipality, and that the community had one person serving as mayor. Boonville, Texas
Boonville was the first county seat of Brazos County, Texas, now a ghost town. History Boonville was the county seat in Brazos County (formerly known as Navasota County) from the 1840s to the 1860s. Boonville was named in honor of Mordecai Boon, Sr., nephew of Daniel Boone. When the Houston and Texas Central Railway was extended from Millican to Bryan in 1866, Bryan was made the county seat. The former town site is now located in Bryan near State Highway 6. Since the 1990s, a cemetery on Boonville Road has been the last remaining structure associated with Boonville. It is marked by a Texas Centennial monument. The area around the cemetery is now the Boonville Heritage Park as of early 2015. The park has new structures including a log cabin built in 1856 and relocated from Grimes County, Texas. William Joel Bryan
William Joel Bryan (December 14, 1815 – March 3, 1903) was a Texas soldier and planter. Biography Early life William Joel Bryan was born on December 14, 1815 at Hazel Run in Sainte Genevieve County, Missouri. His father was James Bryan and his mother, Emily Austin Perry. He was the grandson of Moses Austin and Mary Brown Austin. Stephen F. Austin was his uncle. He had two brothers, Moses Austin Bryan and Guy Morrison Bryan, and a half-brother, Stephen Samuel Perry. He attended school in Potosi, Missouri until 1830. In 1831, his mother (Emily) and stepfather, James Franklin Perry, followed his uncle, Stephen F. Austin, to Texas. They settled in the eastern part of Brazoria County, Texas. Moses Austin
Moses Austin (October 4, 1761 – June 10, 1821) was an American businessman and pioneer who played a large part in the development of the lead industry in the early United States. He was the father of Stephen F. Austin, one of the earliest American settlers of Texas, which was at the time part of Mexico. After receiving a land grant from the Spanish Crown in 1820, Moses Austin planned to be the first to establish an Anglo-American settlement in Spanish Texas, but he died before his dream was realized. On his deathbed, he pleaded with his son to fulfill his dream to colonize Texas. Stephen led the colony to a now-sovereign Mexico in 1825, and in time, the settlers demanded autonomy and later won independence from Mexico under President Antonio López de Santa Anna, thereby establishing the Republic of Texas.
