Brookwood Military Cemetery
Brookwood Cemetery, also known as the London Necropolis, is a burial ground in Brookwood, Surrey, England. It is the largest cemetery in the United Kingdom and one of the largest in Europe. The cemetery is listed a Grade I site in the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. History Background Brookwood Cemetery was conceived by the London Necropolis Company (LNC) in 1849 to house London's deceased, at a time when the capital was finding it difficult to accommodate its increasing population, of living and dead. The cemetery is said to have been landscaped by architect William Tite, but this is disputed. In 1854, Brookwood was the largest cemetery in the world but it is no longer. Lord Edward Clinton
Lieutenant-Colonel Lord Edward William Pelham-Clinton (11 August 1836 – 9 July 1907), known as Lord Edward Clinton, was a British Liberal Party politician. Life Clinton was the second son of Henry Pelham-Clinton, 5th Duke of Newcastle and his wife Lady Susan Hamilton and educated at Eton until 1853. He joined the Rifle Brigade as an ensign in 1854 and served in the Crimea after the fall of Sebastopol. He reached the rank of captain in 1857 and spent 5 years in Canada (1861–1865). In 1878 he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and retired in 1880 while posted in India. Clinton was elected unopposed at the 1865 general election as Member of Parliament (MP) for North Nottinghamshire, but did not seek re-election in 1868. A Chelsea Pensioner, or In-Pensioner, is a resident at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, a retirement home and nursing home for former members of the British Army located in Chelsea, London. Brompton Cemetery (originally the West of London and Westminster Cemetery) is a London cemetery, managed by The Royal Parks, in West Brompton in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It is one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries. Established by Act of Parliament and laid out in 1839, it opened in 1840, originally as the ''West of London and Westminster Cemetery''. Royal Hospital Chelsea
The Royal Hospital Chelsea is a retirement home and nursing home for some 300 veterans of the British Army. Founded as an almshouse, the ancient sense of the word "hospital", it is a site located on Royal Hospital Road in Chelsea. The British shilling, abbreviated "1/-", was a unit of currency and a denomination of sterling coinage worth of one pound, or twelve pence. Brookwood is a National Rail railway station in Brookwood in the English county of Surrey. It is down the line from . History The London and Southampton Railway (L&SR) was authorised on 25 July 1834. It was built and opened in stages, and the second section, that between (then known as Woking Common) and , was opened on 24 September 1838; there was only one intermediate station on this section, at Farnborough.
