''Brooklyn'' is a 2015 Romance film, romantic Historical drama, period drama film directed by John Crowley (director), John Crowley and written by Nick Hornby, based on the 2009 Brooklyn (novel), novel of the same name by Colm Tóibín. A co-production between the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Canada, it stars Saoirse Ronan in the lead role, with Emory Cohen, Domhnall Gleeson, Jim Broadbent, and Julie Walters in supporting roles. The plot follows Eilis Lacey, a young Irishwoman who emigrates to Brooklyn in the early 1950s to find employment. After building a life there, she is drawn back to her home town of Enniscorthy and has to choose where she wants to forge her future. Principal photography began in April 2014 with three weeks of filming in Ireland, which were followed by four weeks in Montreal, Quebec; only two days of filming took place in Brooklyn, one of which was spent at the beach in Coney Island. John Crowley (director)
John Crowley (born 19 August 1969) is an Irish film and theatre director. He is best known for the films ''Brooklyn'' (2015) and his debut feature, '' Intermission'' (2003), for which he won an Irish Film and Television Award for Best Director. He is a brother of the designer Bob Crowley. Education Crowley earned a BA in English and Philosophy (1990) and an MA in Philosophy from University College Cork. Career Crowley became involved in theatre as a student, seeing it as a stepping stone to directing film. He began directing plays in Dublin in the early 1990s, reached London's West End by 1996 and eventually become an associate director at the Donmar Warehouse. In 2000, he directed '' Come and Go'' as part of the Beckett on Film series and made his feature debut ''Intermission'' (2003), a comedy drama set in Dublin, starring Colin Farrell, Cillian Murphy and Kelly Macdonald, based on a screenplay by playwright Mark O'Rowe.
