Brian Trench
Brian Trench (born 13 July 1945) is a writer and academic living in Dublin, who has been centrally involved in developing science communication and science-in-society studies in Ireland. Early life Brian Trench is the son of artist Bea Orpen and the founding secretary and former president of An Óige, Chalmers Edward FitzJohn ('Terry') Trench. He has two brothers and one sister. He has always been involved in left-wing activism and in 1969 joined the International Socialist in London. He was a leading member of the Socialist Workers' Movement in Dublin in the 1970s and joined the Socialist Labour Party in 1977 when Socialist Workers' Movement became a sub group within the newly formed political party. Bea Orpen
Bea Orpen HRHA (7 March 1913 – 12 July 1980) was an Irish landscape and portrait painter and teacher. She aided in the establishment of the Drogheda Municipal Gallery of Art. Early life and education Beatrice Esther Orpen was born at Lisheens, Carrickmines, County Dublin, on 7 March 1913. She was one of a pair of twin girls and was the youngest of five daughters and one son of Charles St George Orpen and Cerise Maria Orpen (née Darley). Her father was a solicitor and served as the president of the Incorporated Law Society from 1915 to 1916. Her sister Kathleen Delap was an activist and feminist. Orpen was the niece of the architect and painter Richard Caulfield Orpen and the painter Sir William Orpen. An Óige
An Óige (; meaning "Youth"), or the Irish Youth Hostel Association (IYHA), is a non-profit organisation providing youth hostel accommodation across the Republic of Ireland. An Óige is a member of Hostelling International. Background An Óige was founded on 7 May 1931 by an organising committee which included Thekla Beere, Shane Bodkin, and Chalmers (Terry) Trench. The group had been inspired by the success of the Jugendherbergen in Germany. An Óige's first youth hostel was opened at Lough Dan, near Roundwood, in County Wicklow. An Óige was formed as a membership-based organisation and at its peak had some 15,000 members and ran 55 hostels. It is now a member of Hostelling International. Around the year 1990, the organisation bought the former convent school and orphanage complex at 60-61 Mountjoy Street, built circa 1865, and remodelled it for use as a hostel. The Socialist Workers Network (SWN) is an Irish Trotskyist organisation. It was founded in 1971 as the Socialist Workers Movement (SWM), before becoming the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) in 1995. The SWP was a founding member of People Before Profit and was a member of the European United Left-Nordic Green Left and International Socialist Tendency.
