Breaking Into Society
''Breaking Into Society'' is a 1923 American silent comedy film directed by Hunt Stromberg and starring Carrie Clark Ward, Bull Montana, and Kalla Pasha. Plot As described in a film magazine review, the O'Toole's of Tin Can Alley inherit a great fortune. Determined to achieve a position in society, they settle Pasadena and entertain there in a lavish scale. However, their manners and disposition to rush matters get them into various scrapes. The final touch comes when a boxer and his bride from Chatham Square Chatham Square is a major intersection in Chinatown, Manhattan, New York City. Hunt Stromberg
Hunt Stromberg (July 12, 1894 – August 23, 1968) was a film producer during Hollywood's Golden Age. In a prolific 30-year career beginning in 1921, Stromberg produced, wrote, and directed some of Hollywood's most profitable and enduring films, including '' The Thin Man'' series, the Nelson Eddy/Jeanette MacDonald operettas, '' The Women'', and ''The Great Ziegfeld'', which won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1936. Early career Hunt Stromberg was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1894. Leo White
Leo White (November 10, 1882 – September 20, 1948), Leo Weiss, was a German-born British-American film and stage actor who appeared as a character actor in many Charlie Chaplin films. Biography Born in Germany, White grew up in England where he began his stage career. He was brought to the United States under the aegis of Daniel Frohman, a Broadway producer. He started his film career in 1911 and in 1913 moved to the Essanay Studios. In 1915, he began appearing in Chaplin's comedies and continued through Chaplin's Mutual Film comedies. His last appearance in a Chaplin film was a small role in ''The Great Dictator'', released in 1940. White also acted in and directed '' Triple Trouble'' (1918), Essanay's last Chaplin release. Charles Reisner
Charles Francis Reisner (March 14, 1887 – September 24, 1962) was an American film director and actor of the 1920s and 1930s. The German-American directed over 60 films between 1920 and 1950 and acted in over 20 films between 1916 and 1929. He starred with Charlie Chaplin in ''A Dog's Life'' in 1918 and '' The Kid'' in 1921. He directed Buster Keaton (Keaton also co-directed it with him) in ''Steamboat Bill, Jr.'' (1928). During the late 1920s, through the 1940s, Reisner was under contract to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. In 1930, he directed '' Chasing Rainbows'', a musical which starred Bessie Love and Charles King. He directed '' The Big Store'' (1941), the Marx Brothers' last film for MGM. Reisner died of a heart attack in La Jolla, California in 1962 at the age of 75. Stanhope Nelson Wheatcroft (May 11, 1888 – February 13, 1966) was an American actor of the stage and screen who was primarily active during Hollywood's silent era. Biography Stanhope was born in New York City in 1888 to Nelson Wheatcroft and Adeline Stanhope. Both of his parents were renowned actors and drama teachers born in Europe. Stanhope attended Columbia University in New York City, and reportedly decided to embark upon a career as an actor after his father's death. Broadway plays in which Wheatcroft appeared included ''Marrying Money'' (1914), ''A Gentleman from Mississippi'' (1908), ''The Warrens of Virginia'' (1907), ''The Movers'' (1907), ''Zira'' (1905), and ''Nancy Stair'' (1905). Stanley J. "Tiny" Sandford (February 26, 1894October 29, 1961) was an American actor who is best remembered for his roles in Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin films. His tall, burly physique usually led him to be cast as a comic heavy, and often played policemen, doormen, prizefighters, or bullies. Biography Sandford was born in Osage, Iowa, in 1894. After working in stock theater he began acting in movies around 1910. He appeared in ''The Gold Rush'' with Charlie Chaplin. Other Chaplin films that he appeared in include '' The Circus'' (1928) and '' Modern Times'' (1936), where he plays "Big Bill".
