Brachylophosaurus
''Brachylophosaurus'' ( or ) is a genus of hadrosaurid dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period of western North America. It was first named in 1953 by Charles Mortram Sternberg for a skull and skeleton he discovered in 1936 in the Oldman Formation of Alberta, Canada, for which he named the new taxon ''Brachylophosaurus canadensis''. While this single specimen was the only known material of ''Brachylophosaurus'' for a long time, extensive discoveries in the Judith River Formation of Montana, USA have uncovered not only additional skulls and skeletons with extensive impressions of skin, but also a bonebed of 800 specimens. The earliest of these discoveries in Montana was named ''Brachylophosaurus goodwini'' by John R. Horner, but it is now believed that there was only a single species of ''Brachylophosaurus'', with ''B. goodwini'' as either a junior synonym of ''B. canadensis'' or an indeterminate member of Brachylophosaurini. Hadrosaurid
Hadrosaurids (), also hadrosaurs or duck-billed dinosaurs, are members of the ornithischian family Hadrosauridae. This group is known as the duck-billed dinosaurs for the flat duck-bill appearance of the bones in their snouts. The ornithopod family, which includes genera such as ''Edmontosaurus'' and ''Parasaurolophus'', was a common group of herbivores during the Late Cretaceous Period (geology), Period. Brachylophosaurini
Saurolophinae is a subfamily (biology), subfamily of hadrosaurid dinosaurs. It has since the mid-20th century generally been called the Hadrosaurinae, a group of largely non-crested hadrosaurs related to the crested sub-family Lambeosaurinae. However, the name Hadrosaurinae is based on the genus ''Hadrosaurus'' which was found in more recent studies to be more primitive than either lambeosaurines or other traditional "hadrosaurines", like ''Edmontosaurus'' and ''Saurolophus''. As a result of this, the name Hadrosaurinae was dropped or restricted to ''Hadrosaurus'' alone, and the subfamily comprising the traditional "hadrosaurines" was renamed the Saurolophinae. Recent phylogenetic work by Hai Xing indicates that ''Hadrosaurus'' is placed within the monophyletic group containing all non-lambeosaurine hadrosaurids. Judith River Formation
The Judith River Formation is a fossil-bearing geologic formation in Montana, and is part of the Montana Group. It dates to the Late Cretaceous, between 79 and 75.3 million years ago, corresponding to the "Judithian" land vertebrate age. Oldman Formation
The Oldman Formation is a stratigraphic unit of Late Cretaceous (Campanian stage) age that underlies much of southern Alberta, Canada. It consists primarily of sandstones that were deposited in fluvial channel and floodplain environments. Charles Mortram Sternberg
Charles Mortram Sternberg (18 September 1885 – 8 September 1981) was an American-Canadian fossil collector and paleontologist, son of Charles Hazelius Sternberg. Late in his career, he collected and described '' Pachyrhinosaurus'', ''Brachylophosaurus'', ''Parksosaurus'' and '' Edmontonia''. A contemporary author wrote, "No published study of Canadian dinosaurs is possible today without citing one or another of Sternberg's papers." Early life Charles Mortram Sternberg was born in Lawrence, Kansas, from a family of famous American fossil collectors. Sternberg's highest level of education was a Kansas high school degree. Career Sternberg moved with his father and two brothers, Levi and George, to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1912. Saurolophus
''Saurolophus'' (; meaning "lizard crest") is a genus of large hadrosaurid dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous period of Asia and North America, that lived in what is now the Horseshoe Canyon and Nemegt formations about 70 million to 66 million years ago. It is one of the few genera of dinosaurs known from multiple continents. The type species, ''S. osborni'', was described by Barnum Brown in 1912 from Canadian fossils. A second valid species, ''S. angustirostris'', is represented by numerous specimens from Mongolia, and was described by Anatoly Konstantinovich Rozhdestvensky. The University of California Museum of Paleontology (UCMP) is a paleontology museum located on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley. The museum is within the Valley Life Sciences Building (VLSB), designed by George W. Kelham and completed in 1930. Its collections are primarily intended for research and are, thus, not accessible to the public. A limited number of fossils from the collection is on display in the VLSB.
