Bowcombe (hundred)
Bowcombe is a hamlet on the Isle of Wight. It has an elevation of and is located southwest of Newport, Isle of Wight, Newport in the centre of the Island. Public transport is provided by Southern Vectis buses on route 12. Geography The hamlet gives its name to the nearby Bowcombe Down and 2000-acre Bowcombe View Shooting Ground. The down is home to a listed historical site that contains a Bronze Age barrow and an Anglo-Saxon cemetery. History Bowcombe was mentioned in the Doomsday Book at the time it had 60 households, which was very large for a settlement at the time, with a total value of £20 in 1066. In 1870–72 John Marius Wilson, John Marius said of the village in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, Imperial Gazetteer "Bowcombe vale, around it, formerly displayed much beauty, but has suffered by destruction of its wood." Boxing The Compass
The points of the compass are a set of horizontal, radially arrayed compass directions (or azimuths) used in navigation and cartography. A compass rose is primarily composed of four cardinal directions—north, east, south, and west—each separated by 90 degrees, and secondarily divided by four ordinal (intercardinal) directions—northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest—each located halfway between two cardinal directions. Some disciplines such as meteorology and navigation further divide the compass with additional azimuths. Within European tradition, a fully defined compass has 32 'points' (and any finer subdivisions are described in fractions of points). Compass points are valuable in that they allow a user to refer to a specific azimuth in a colloquial fashion, without having to compute or remember degrees.
