Bob Lewis (golfer)
Robert C. Lewis, Jr. (July 12, 1944 – March 23, 2021) was an American amateur golfer from Pepper Pike, Ohio. Lewis was born in Warren, Ohio. He played college golf at Rollins College, graduating in 1967. He won the 1968 Ohio Amateur on his 24th birthday. Lewis turned professional and played on the PGA Tour from 1971 to 1974 without much success. He then quit professional golf and had his amateur status reinstated. As an amateur, Lewis finished runner-up at the 1980 U.S. Amateur and the 1981 and 1984 U.S. Mid-Amateurs. He played on four straight U.S. Walker Cup teams (1981, 1983, 1985, 1987) – all winners. He played on the winning 1982 Eisenhower Trophy team and the 1986 team that finished second. Lewis captained the 2003 and 2005 Walker Cup teams. Lewis was inducted into the Ohio Golf Association Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Northern Ohio Golf Association Hall of Fame in 2003. Lewis died on March 23, 2021, from lung cancer. Warren is a city in and the county seat of Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. Located in northeastern Ohio, Warren lies approximately northwest of Youngstown and southeast of Cleveland. The population was 39,201 at the 2020 census. The historical county seat of the Connecticut Western Reserve, it is the second largest city in the Youngstown–Warren metropolitan area, and anchors the northern part of that area. History Ephraim Quinby founded Warren in 1798, on of land that he purchased from the Connecticut Land Company, as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Quinby named the town for the town's surveyor, Moses Warren. The town was the county seat of the Western Reserve, then became the Trumbull County seat in 1801. 1981 Walker Cup
The 1981 Walker Cup, the 28th Walker Cup Match, was played on August 28 and 29, 1981, at Cypress Point Club, Pebble Beach, California. The event was won by the United States 15 to 9. The United States led 8–4 after the first day but Great Britain and Ireland won 3 of the 4 second-day foursomes to reduce the American lead to 9–7. Although Roger Chapman beat Hal Sutton in the top singles match, the United States won 5 and halved the other 2 of the remaining 7 matches for a comfortable victory. Format The format for play on Friday and Saturday was the same. There were four matches of foursomes in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. In all, 24 matches were played. Each of the 24 matches was worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match was all square after the 18th hole extra holes were not played.
