Birchandra Manu Massacre
On 12 October 1988, activists of the Indian National Congress attacked a Communist Party of India (Marxist) office in Birchandra Manu village, Belonia sub-division in southern Tripura, India. The attack took place whilst the CPI(M) cadres were hoisting a red flag to mark the re-opening of their local party office (which had been closed following previous attacks from Congress workers) at 4 pm. Present at the hoisting ceremony were two prominent CPI(M) leaders, the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council member Sridam Pal and the Tripura Legislative Assembly member Brajamohan Jamatia. Eleven CPI(M) cadres were killed. Sridam Pal was amongst the dead, whilst Brajamohan Jamatia narrowly escaped death. Belonia, India
Belonia is a town and municipal council in South Tripura district, Tripura, India. It is also the headquarters of South Tripura District. It is linked with Agartala (the state capital) by National Highway 108A from Belonia to Jolaibari and via National Highway 8 from Jolaibari to Agartala. Belonia lies on the border with Bangladesh. The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) is an autonomous district council administering the Tipra-dominated areas of the state of Tripura, India. Its council and assembly are situated in Khumulwng, a town 26 km away from Agartala, the state capital. Presently, with the result of 2021 ADC election held at 6 April, TIPRA Motha has emerged as the majority with 18 seats along with its ally The Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra.
