Billboards (ballet)
''Billboards'' is a ballet commissioned by Gerald Arpino for the Joffrey Ballet featuring the works of Prince. The premiere was on Wednesday, January 27, 1993, at Hancher Auditorium, University of Iowa, Iowa City. No new music was used, although Prince contributed a special extended ten-minute orchestrated version of "Thunder" from the ''Diamonds and Pearls'' album. A video of the performance was released on VHS in February 1994, and on Laserdisc format. Prince (musician)
Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958April 21, 2016), more commonly known mononymously as Prince, was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer. The recipient of numerous awards and nominations, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation. He was known for his flamboyant, androgynous persona; his wide vocal range, which included a far-reaching falsetto and high-pitched screams; and his skill as a multi-instrumentalist, often preferring to play all or most of the instruments on his recordings. Prince produced his albums himself, pioneering the Minneapolis sound. His music incorporated a wide variety of styles, including funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, and hip hop. Baby I'm A Star
"Baby I'm a Star" is a song written and recorded by American musician Prince from his album '' Purple Rain''. It is also the B-side on the "Take Me with U" single. Release "Baby I'm a Star" has been played live many times since its inception and was one of the songs Prince played during the Halftime Show of Super Bowl XLI. It was also in the original cut of Tim Burton's 1989 film ''Batman'', used in the Joker's parade scene. However, when Prince agreed to compose the ''Batman'' soundtrack, he opted for the song to be replaced by "200 Balloons" (of which when rejected, turned up as a B-side on " Batdance") and later with "Trust", the latter of which seemed the most musically similar to "Baby I'm a Star", for both songs are about the same length, have a similar drum loop and lyrical pace. Gett Off
"Gett Off" is a song written and produced by American musician Prince for his thirteenth album, ''Diamonds and Pearls'' (1991). The album was his first with his backing band the New Power Generation. "Gett Off" was released as the lead single from ''Diamonds and Pearls'' in June 1991. "Gett Off" was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching number four in the United Kingdom. In the United States, "Gett Off" went to number 21 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and number six on the ''Billboard'' Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. In addition, "Gett Off" was Prince's seventh and final song to reach number one on the ''Billboard'' Dance Club Songs. It ranked at number 97 in VH1's ''100 Greatest Songs of the '90s''. The Time (band)
The Time, also known as Morris Day and the Time and The Original 7ven, is an American musical group founded in Minneapolis in 1981. Their work has been a part of the formation of the Minneapolis sound, featuring a mix of soul music and dance music with funk, rock n roll, and more. Led by singer-songwriter Morris Day the band members are known for having been close Prince associates, and are arguably the most successful artists who have worked with Prince, achieving particular popularity with R&B fans with tracks such as " The Bird", " Cool", and " Jungle Love". The Beautiful Ones
"The Beautiful Ones" is the third track on Prince and the Revolution's soundtrack album '' Purple Rain''. It was one of three songs produced, arranged, composed, and performed by Prince, the other two being "When Doves Cry" and " Darling Nikki". The song was recorded at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles by Peggy Mac and David Leonard on September 20, 1983. The song replaced "Electric Intercourse" on the ''Purple Rain'' album. The version on the ''Purple Rain'' album is slightly cut; a longer version of the song exists. Mariah Carey covered the song, as a duet with R&B group Dru Hill, for her sixth studio album ''Butterfly''. Computer Blue
"Computer Blue" is a song by Prince and The Revolution. Released on June 25, 1984, it is the fourth track on Prince's sixth album, '' Purple Rain'', which also served as the soundtrack to the film of the same name. In the film, the song represents Prince's character's angst at the budding relationship between the characters played by Morris Day and Apollonia, the latter of whom he desires, and he performs it in front of the two during The Revolution's set at a nightclub with the aim of upsetting them. The song was composed by Prince with credit to his father, John L. Nelson, for the guitar solo based on a piano instrumental written by Nelson and Prince. He titled the instrumental piece "Father's Song" and recorded it on piano for the film, though onscreen it was portrayed as being played by Prince's character's father, played by Clarence Williams III. Margo Sappington
Margo Sappington (born July 30, 1947 in Baytown, Texas) is an American choreographer and dancer. She was nominated in 1975 for both a Tony Award as Best Choreographer and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Choreography for her work on the play ''Where's Charley?''. In 1988, her ballet ''Virgin Forest'' was the subject of an award-winning documentary by PBS. In 2005 she received a Lifetime Achievement Award for choreography from the Joffrey Ballet. Career Sappington joined the Joffrey Ballet in 1965 at the personal invitation of founder Robert Joffrey. In 1969, she co-wrote, choreographed, and performed in the original off-Broadway revue ''Oh! "Purple Rain" is a song by American musician Prince and his backing band the Revolution. It is the title track from the 1984 album of the same name, which in turn is the soundtrack album for the 1984 film of the same name starring Prince, and was released as the third single from the album. The song is a power ballad that combines rock, R&B, gospel, and orchestral music. "Purple Rain" reached No. 2 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and stayed there for two weeks, being kept off the top spot by " Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" by Wham! Charles Moulton (choreographer)
Charles Moulton (born July 13, 1954) is an American choreographer and visual artist who has staged dances on Mikhail Baryshnikov, Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Project, The Joffrey Ballet, The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, The Ohio Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theater, Gauthier Dance (Stuttgart), and many other companies in the US and abroad. He is a Guggenheim Award winner, a Dorothy Chandler Arts Achievement winner and a co-founding director of Performance Space 122 in downtown Manhattan. He is currently co-artistic director of Garrett + Moulton Productions, a San Francisco based performing arts organization that presents live dance and music.
