Bienno
Bienno ( Camunian: ) is an Italian ''comune'' in Val Camonica, province of Brescia, Lombardy, classed as one of the five most beautiful villages of Italy by the Council of Tourism of the Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI). Geography The village is located in Val Grigna, on the northern side of the river Grigna. It is bordered by other towns such as: Bagolino, Berzo Inferiore, Bovegno, Breno, Cividate Camuno, Collio, Prestine. Géographie History In 1295 a dispute occurred with the neighbouring village Bovegno regarding some high pastures. On January 25, 1350 the bishop of Brescia invested iure feuds for a tenth of the rights in the territories of the Municipality of Bienno (vicinia) and men of Bienno. This also happened back in 1295, 1336, and later in 1388, 1423 and 1486. Breno ( Camunian: ; obsolete german: Brenn) is an Italian comune of 4,986 inhabitants in Val Camonica, province of Brescia, in Lombardy. Geography It is bounded by other communes of Niardo, Bagolino, Bienno, Braone, Ceto, Cividate Camuno, Condino (TN), Daone (TN), Losine, Malegno, Niardo, Prestine. The town of Breno stands in a north-south gorge, between the castle hill and the Corno Cerreto, on the left bank of the river Oglio. According to professor Fedele the gorge was once the bed of the Oglio. History On top of the castle hill a house dating back to the Neolithic was discovered. Giovanni Pietro da Cemmo (15th century - 16th century) was an Italian painter. Details on the artist's life are very scarce: perhaps born in Cemmo, he was active from 1474 to 1504 in a large area including Brescia and Cremona. Giovanni Pietro was born into a family of artists. Among the members of his family were Master Ghirardo and Master Paroto, who in 1447 signed an altarpiece for the Pieve of San Siro in Cemmo.
