Bendyshe Layton
Bendyshe Layton (died 17 January 1918) was a British businessman and member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. He was with the firm of Gibb, Livingston & Co., one of the leading trading firms in the East during the late nineteenth century. He later started his own business firm, Layton & Co., as a bill and bullion broker. In 1888, he was nominated by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce to sit temporarily in the Legislative Council during the absence of Alexander Palmer MacEwen, A. P. MacEwen. He left Hong Kong in around 1913 or 1914 due to his health issue and lived in Britain until his death on 17 January 1918. He had a son named G. B. Layton, who succeeded him as the head of the Layton & Co. Legislative Council Of Hong Kong
The Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (LegCo) is the unicameral legislature of Hong Kong. It sits under China's " one country, two systems" constitutional arrangement, and is the power centre of Hong Kong's hybrid representative democracy. The functions of the Legislative Council are to enact, amend or repeal laws; examine and approve budgets, taxation and public expenditure; and raise questions on the work of the government. Gibb, Livingston & Co
Gibb, Livingston & Co., known in Chinese as Jinkee or Renji, was one of the most important and best-known foreign trading firms in China in the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Gibb, Livingston & Co. was established on 1July 1836 in Canton (Guangzhou), by two Scotsmen, Thomas Augustus Gibb and William Potter Livingston, who were originally employees of the British East India Company. and moved to Macao during the First Opium War. It opened the first office at Queen's Road, Hong Kong when the island was ceded to the British as a colony. In 1844 John Darby Gibb opened a branch in Shanghai at the Cadastral Lot No. 2. on Jinkee Road (now ) which was named after the firm. The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC; ) was founded on 29 May 1861, and is the oldest and one of the largest business organizations in Hong Kong. Alexander Palmer MacEwen
Alexander Palmer MacEwen (1846–1919) was a British businessman in China and member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. Biography MacEwen was head of the Holiday, Wise & Co., agent and member on the consulting committee of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, Jardine, Matheson & Co. and Union Insurance Society of Canton.
