Bayard is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Allen County, Kansas, United States. History In 1910, Bayard was a station on the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad with a money order postoffice with one rural route, an express office, and some mercantile interests. It was a shipping point for the surrounding agricultural district. The population that year was reported as 50. A post office was opened in Front (an extinct town) in June 1886, but it was moved to Bayard in August 1887 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in April 1943. Geography Bayard is located at (37.9936443, -95.1630313), in Section 36, Township 23 south, Range 20 east and Section 1, Township 24 south, Range 20 east. It is situated along the northern bank of a minor creek which empties into the South Fork Little Osage River. Area code 620 covers telephone exchanges in most of southern Kansas. It was created as the result of a split from 316 on February 3, 2001. The area code stretches across the southern half of the state, from the Colorado border in the west to the Missouri border in the east. It completely surrounds 316, which now only serves Wichita and its inner suburbs, making it one of the six pairs of "doughnut area codes" in the numbering plan. Permissive dialing of 316 across southern Kansas continued until November 3, 2001. The most populous cities covered by the area code are Dodge City, Garden City, Hutchinson and Pittsburg. 620 was created due to the growing proliferation of cell phones in the Wichita area. Moran is a city in Allen County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 466. History Moran had its start in the year 1881 by the building of the Saint Louis, Fort Scott, and Wichita Railroad (later known as the Wichita & Western Division of the Missouri Pacific Railroad) through that territory. Mildred, Kansas
Mildred is a unincorporated community in Allen County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the community and nearby areas was 25. History Mildred was founded in 1907 by Sam Dermott for the Great Western Cement Company. The community was named for the daughter of J. W. Wagner a local industrialist, and the president of the cement company. For much of the twentieth century, the community was served by the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad, which maintained a passenger depot in the community, as well as spur lines that served the cement plant and the grain elevator. Cement was shipped all over the world, and cement from the plant was used to construct the Liberty Memorial and World War I museum in Kansas City, Missouri. At its peak the community had a population of approximately 2,000 and the cement plant employed 375, but the community lost most of its population when the plant closed. Iola () is the county seat of Allen County, Kansas, United States. The city is situated along the Neosho River in southeast Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 5,396. It is named in honor of Iola Colborn. History The history of Iola began in 1859.
