Batavia (town), New York
Batavia is a town in Genesee County, New York, United States. The population was 6,809 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Roman name for part of the Netherlands. The Town of Batavia was formed in 1802 along with the county. Batavia is centrally located in the county. The City of Batavia is surrounded by the town, but not part of the town. History The town was settled at the end of the 18th century. When Genesee County was created in 1802, it was created with one town: the Town of Batavia. At that time the county and its coterminous town encompassed most of western New York. The regional office of the Holland Land Company, the owner of all this territory, was located in the town, in the Village of Batavia, founded by Joseph Ellicott, the company's land agent. As other counties and towns were created, the territory of both the county and Town of Batavia shrank to its current size. Holland Land Company
The Holland Land Company was an unincorporated syndicate of thirteen Dutch investors from Amsterdam who in 1792 and 1793 purchased the western two-thirds of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase, an area that afterward was known as the Holland Purchase. Aliens were forbidden from owning land within New York State (except by special acts of the New York State Legislature), so investors placed their funds in the hands of certain trustees who bought the land in central and western New York State. The syndicate hoped to sell the land rapidly at a great profit. Instead, for many years they were forced to make further investments in their purchase; surveying it, building roads, digging canals, to make it more attractive to settlers. They sold the last of their land interests in 1840, when the syndicate was dissolved. Alexander (town), New York
Alexander is a town in Genesee County, New York, United States. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Alexander Rea, an early settler, and is on the southern border of the county. It includes a village also named Alexander. History Alexander Rea purchased in the town in 1802 for $56.20 and founded the village of Alexander. The next year he laid out a road, now Walnut Street and Route 98, north of the settlement. Stafford is a town in Genesee County, New York, United States. The population was 2,459 at the 2010 census. The town was named after a town of the same name in England. Stafford is one of only two interior towns in Genesee County, lying in the east central part of the county, east of Batavia. History The town was first settled in 1798, one of the first of the towns in the Holland Purchase to be occupied. Stafford was formed in 1820 from parts of the towns of Batavia and Le Roy. Oakfield is a town in Genesee County, New York, United States. The population was 3,250 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from a number of trees, including the oak. The town is on the northern border of Genesee County. Within the town is a village also named Oakfield. History Prehistoric earthworks indicate a previous occupation by Native Americans. The local tribe during historic time were the Seneca people. The manner in which they cut down the trees on their land gave rise to the phrase "Oak Orchard," which has current usage in the area. Interstate 90 (I-90) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that runs from Seattle, Washington, to Boston, Massachusetts.
