Bastelica is a commune in the Corse-du-Sud department of France on the island of Corsica. It was the birthplace of Sampiero Corso. The inhabitants of the commune are known as ''Bastelicais'', ''Bastelicaises'', or ''Bastilcacci''. Geography Bastelica is located in the interior of the island in the high valley of the Prunelli south-west of the Monte Renoso massif of which it shares the summit at of Monte Renoso with Bocognano and Ghisoni. It is also part of the Regional Natural Park of Corsica. It is some 18 km east of Ajaccio (in a straight line). It has many pastures planted with chestnut trees. Access to the commune is by the D27 from Cauro in the south-west which passes through the length of the commune and the village before continuing north to Bocognano. The D27A goes east from the village to the mountain heights but has no exit. The D3 branches from the D27 south of the village and goes south-west to join the Route nationale N196 near Ajaccio. Prunelli
The Prunelli is a small coastal river in the department of Corse-du-Sud, Corsica, France. It flows into the Golfe d'Ajaccio on the Mediterranean Sea. Course The Prunelli is long. It crosses the communes of Ajaccio, Bastelica, Bastelicaccia, Cauro, Eccica-Suarella, Grosseto-Prugna, Ocana and Tolla. The Prunelli originates in Lac de Bracca to the northeast of the Punta Capanella and southeast of the Punta alla Vetta. It flows east, then turns to a southwest direction, flows through Lac de Vitalaca and continues past Bastelica. The Prunelli is joined by the Ese river to the east of Tolla. The Ese is crossed by the magnificent Zipitoli Genoese bridge near its confluence with the Prunelli. To the south of Tolla the river is dammed to form the Lac de Tolla. Sampiero Corso
Sampiero Corso ( co, Sampieru Corsu, born Sampiero da Bastelica; 1498 – 17 January 1567) was a Corsican soldier, father of the Marshal of France Alphonse d'Ornano. Early career Born in Bastelica as a common man (although his mother was of the lower nobility), he became a '' condottiero'' mercenary at age 14, serving Giovanni de' Medici, then Pope Clement VII, and, in 1530, Ippolito de' Medici. As of 1535, Sampiero's career was tied to the French House of Valois. He fought successfully for King Francis I, alongside the Chevalier de Bayard, in the Italian Wars; in 1547, he acquired the rank of colonel of the mercenary Corsican troops, and, in accordance with usage, became known by his moniker (indicative of his place of origin). The renown ensured his large fortune, and he married the noblewoman Vannina d'Ornano (he was 49, she was just 15). Ajaccio
Ajaccio (, , ; French: ; it, Aiaccio or ; co, Aiacciu , locally: ; la, Adiacium) is a French commune, prefecture of the department of Corse-du-Sud, and head office of the '' Collectivité territoriale de Corse'' (capital city of Corsica). Afa (, ; co, Afà) a commune in the Corse-du-Sud department on the island and collectivity of Corsica, France. The inhabitants are called ''afayens'' () or ''afayennes'' () in French, ''afaghjinchi'' (singular: ''afaghjincu'', ''afaghjinca'') in Corsican, and ''afaianesi'' (singular: ''afaianese'') historically in Italian. Geography Afa town is a small town about north-east of Ajaccio, located north-west of the Gravona valley. Bocognano (; co, Bucugnà, ) is a commune located in the department of Corse-du-Sud, on the island of Corsica, France. The village, situated at the south-western side of the climb to the Col de Vizzavona, belongs to the micro of Celavo which is historically the capital. Monte Renoso
Monte Renoso ( co, Monti Rinosu) is a mountain in the departments of Haute-Corse and Corse-du-Sud on the island of Corsica, France. It is the highest peak in the Monte Renoso massif. Location The peak of Monte Renoso is on the boundary between the commune of Ghisoni in Haute-Corse and the communes of Bastelica and Bocognano in Corse-du-Sud. The peak is located on the S-shaped backbone of the island. The Punta Bacinello is to the north, the Punta alla Vetta is to the west and the Punta Orlandino is to the south. Lac de Bastani is to the north of the peak, and Lac de Nielluccio is to the east. Lac de Bastiani is a glacier lake that is ice-covered far into the summer.
