Basse Santa Su, usually known as Basse, is a town in the Gambia, lying on the south bank of the River Gambia. The easternmost major town in the nation, it known for its important market. Basse is the capital of the Upper River Division, which is coterminous with the Basse Local Government Areas of the Gambia, Local Government Area. As of 2009, the town has an estimated population of 18,414. According to the 2013 census, the Basse LGA has 243,791 residents. A bridge over the Gambia river, funded by the Chinese government, opened in October 2021. Éliane Basse or Éliane Basse de Ménorval (21 May 1899 – 28 January 1985) was a French paleontologist and geologist who became research director at the French National Center for Scientific Research in 1960. Life A student at the École normale supérieure in Sèvres for three years. She became professor-head of laboratory at the Lycée de Troyes and then was a doctoral fellow at the French National Museum of Natural History for two years. She earned a doctorate in science and was named Scientific Director of research at the National Center for Scientific Research (often abbreviated CNRS) and associate professor of natural sciences. Basse married fellow paleontologist Hervé de la Goublaye de Ménorval (1896 - 1973) on 11 June 1935 and assumed the name Éliane Basse de Ménorval. Jeremiah Basse
Jeremiah Basse (died 1725) was a governor of both West Jersey and East Jersey. He became governor of West Jersey in 1697, and became governor of East Jersey in 1697. Basse was not an effective governor, however, after Andrew Hamilton returned to England in 1698, following an act of parliament which provided that "no other than a natural-born subject of England could serve in any public post of trust or profit." Basse was unable to effectively maintain a good administration during his term of governorship, so finally Hamilton was reappointed as the governor on 19 August 1699. After being province secretary for Edward Hyde, Lord Cornbury and entering the Cornbury ring, he was convicted during the governorship of John Lovelace for perjury. Marie Senghor Basse (1930-2019), full name Marie-Thérèse Camille Senghor Basse, was a Senegalese physician who led the ''Centre de protection maternelle et infantile'' (Maternal and Child Protection Center). Basse represented Senegal at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and directed the Institute of Food Technology. William Basse (c.1583–1653?) was an English poet. A follower of Edmund Spenser, he is now remembered principally for an elegy on Shakespeare. He is also noted for his " Angler's song", which was written for Izaak Walton, who included it in ''The Compleat Angler''. Willie Basse
Wilber Cornelius Rice, Jr. ( ), known by the stage name Willie Basse, was an American hard rock vocalist, bassist, music producer, engineer and songwriter. He was the frontman for Black Sheep, a 1980s metal band that featured a number of noteworthy musicians throughout its line-up changes. The last known line-up consisted of Basse on bass, Marshall Harrison and Brian Conroy on guitars, and James Kottak on drums. Other members included Slash, Paul Gilbert, Randy Castillo, Kurt James , Ed DeGenaro and Mitch Perry. In 1985, the band released a full-length album, "Trouble In The Streets", on William and Wesley Hein's Enigma Records for which ''Billboard Magazine'' noted Basse as the producer.
