Basketball At The 1977 Summer Universiade
The Basketball competitions in the 1977 Summer Universiade were held in Sofia, Bulgaria. The United States beat the Soviet Union in the final in the men's tournament, but was beaten in the women's competition. Format In the men's tournament, 31 participants were divided into 7 groups of four teams and one group of three. They played a single round-robin match and the winners advanced to the second round and the others to the classification round. In the second round, two groups of four teams played round-robin matches and the top two teams of each group advanced to the semi-final. In the classification round, five groups of four teams and one group of three played round-robin matches and then advanced to the placement sem-finals and finals. Basketball
Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball (approximately in diameter) through the defender's hoop (a basket in diameter mounted high to a backboard at each end of the court, while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. A field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth three. After a foul, timed play stops and the player fouled or designated to shoot a technical foul is given one, two or three one-point free throws.
