Baker County, Georgia
Baker County is a county in Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,876. The county seat and only city is Newton. The county was created December 12, 1825 from the eastern portion of Early County by an act of the Georgia General Assembly and is named for Colonel John Baker, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. Baker County is included in the Albany, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Baker County Courthouse (Georgia) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Three other properties in Newton are also listed on the register: Notchaway Baptist Church and Cemetery, Pine Bloom Plantation, and Tarver Plantation. Baker County Courthouse (Georgia)
The Baker County Courthouse is located in Courthouse Square at Newton in Baker County, Georgia. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980. Baker County has been struck by flooding from the Flint River. The old courthouse was built in 1906 and was damaged by the floods of 1925, 1929, and 1994. It houses the public library and the historical society. The current courthouse is located in a 1930s-era school. The old courthouse was designed by J. W. Golucke. Tarver Plantation
The Tarver Plantation, also known as Tarva Plantation, located on Tarva Rd. (Co. Rt. 122) north of Newton in Baker County, Georgia includes a plantation house built in about 1850. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It was owned and used by Henry Tarver from about 1850 to 1897. In 1850 Henry Tarver owned 87 slaves. State Route 216 (SR 216) is a state highway located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It runs southeast-to-north through portions of Baker, Early, Calhoun, and Randolph counties. Route description SR 216 begins at an intersection with SR 37 northwest of Newton, in central Baker County. It heads northwest, crossing into Early County, until it reaches Arlington. Almost immediately is an intersection with SR 45 (Joe Bryan Highway), which begins a concurrency with SR 216. Just after this is SR 62 (Blakely Road SW), which joins the concurrency. State Route 200 (SR 200) is a state highway that runs west-to-east through portions of Early and Baker counties in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Its western terminus is in Blakely, and its eastern terminus is in Newton. Route description SR 200 begins at an intersection with SR 62 (Magnolia Street) in Blakely. It heads southeast to an intersection with US 27/ SR 1. The road heads east, curves to the southeast, and curves again to the east, until it enters Damascus. The E-Z-Go 200 was a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race that took place at Atlanta Motor Speedway. AMS obtained a fall race when Darlington Raceway lost its truck race as a byproduct of the Ferko lawsuit, when NASCAR was forced to relinquish Darlington's Southern 500 tripleheader to Texas Motor Speedway. However, since Texas was already running a second Truck Series race, the race was awarded to sister track Atlanta giving them two Truck Series races. State Route 91 (SR 91) is an south-to-north state highway in the southwest part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway travels from its southern terminus at the Florida state line, southwest of Donalsonville, where the roadway continues as Florida State Road 2 (SR 2), northeast through Albany to its northern terminus, an intersection with SR 32 at a point northeast of the city.
