Baja ( hu, Bajai járás; german: Kreis Baja) is a district in south-western part of Bács-Kiskun County. '' Baja'' is also the name of the town where the district seat is found. The district is located in the Southern Great Plain Statistical Region. Geography Baja District borders with Kalocsa District to the north, Jánoshalma District and Bácsalmás District to the east, the Serbian district of West Bačka to the south, Mohács District ''( Baranya County)'' and Szekszárd District ''(Tolna County)'' to the west. Sükösd (Croatian: ''Čikuzda'') is a village in Bács-Kiskun county, in the Southern Great Plain region of southern Hungary. History The village was named after the Christian saint, St. Sixtus. In 1521, it was mentioned as ''Sykesd''. Originally, the village was situated much closer to the Danube but, due to the frequent floods, in the early 19th century, the archbishop of Kalocsa resettled its inhabitants on a nearby hill. The new Roman Catholic church was built in 1821. Sükösd had been, for centuries, the property of the archbishops of Kalocsa. Hercegszántó ( hr, Santovo, sr, Сантово) is a village in the Bács-Kiskun County of Hungary, famous for being the birthplace of footballer Flórián Albert. Residents are Magyars, with minority of Serbs and Croats. Until the end of World War II, the Danube Swabians lived in this village, it was the only village of ''Stifulder'', in the Bács-Kiskun county. Stifulder are a Roman Catholic Subgroup of the Danube Swabians whose Ancestors once came at the 17th century and 18th century from Fulda (district). Gara, Hungary
Gara is a village in Bács-Kiskun county, near Baja, in Hungary. History The village is first mentioned in a 1290 document. The name is derived from the ''Garai'' family name. The most commonly accepted theory claims that the word ''Gara'' originates from a Slavic word meaning ''hill.'' (The original village was situated on a small hill, at a distance of 4 kilometers from its current location.) According to Turkish tax listings, the village had 25 houses under Ottoman rule. The original village was destroyed. After the Kingdom of Hungary regained its lost territories, Gara was rebuilt. In 1731, the village's population reached 277. In 1734, Germans settled the place. The first school there was opened in 1755 (by János Bary). In 1895, Gara was connected to the national railroad system.
