Backup Interceptor Control
Backup Interceptor Control (BUIC, ) was the Electronic Systems Division 416M System to backup the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment, SAGE 416L System in the United States and Canada. BUIC deployed Cold War command, control, and coordination systems to SAGE radar stations to create dispersed NORAD Control Centers. __TOC__ Background Prior to the SAGE Direction Centers becoming operational, the USAF deployed General Electric AN/GPA-37 Course Directing Group, data link systems at NORAD Control Centers with ground computers for controlling manned interceptors. Electronic Systems Division
The Electronic Systems Center was a product center of Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) headquartered at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts. Its mission was to develop and acquire Command and Control (Military), command and control, communications, computer, and intelligence systems. ESC consisted of professional teams specializing in engineering, computer science, and Project management, business management. The teams supervised the design, development, testing, production, and deployment of command and control systems. Two of ESC's most well-known developments were the Boeing E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), developed in the 1970s, and the E-8 Joint STARS, Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint STARS), developed in the 1980s. Havre Air Force Station (site designator P-25, Z-25 after 31 July 1963) is a Formerly Used Defense Site that was used as a Cold War general surveillance radar station. Fortuna Air Force Station is a closed United States Air Force General Surveillance Radar station. It is located west of Fortuna, North Dakota. It was closed in 1979 as a radar station, remaining as a Long-Range Radar (LRR) facility until 1984. Fortuna Air Force Station was part of the last batch of twenty-three radar stations constructed as part of the Air Defense Command permanent network. It was activated in April, and declared completely operational in late 1952. Fort Fisher Air Force Station was a United States Air Force installation located on the Atlantic coast southwest of Kure Beach, North Carolina. Its primary mission was as a radar complex.
