Baca County
Baca County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,506. The county seat is Springfield. Located at the southeast corner of Colorado, the county shares state borders with Kansas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. History Baca County was created by the Colorado legislature on April 16, 1889, out of eastern portions of Las Animas County. Baca County was named in honor of pioneer and Colorado territorial legislator Felipe Baca. Prior to the 1880s there was little activity in the county, other than along the Cutoff Branch of the Santa Fe Trail that crosses its extreme southeastern corner. The 1910s saw wet years and expansion due to the increase in acreage that could be homesteaded. World War I also brought increased demand for agricultural products. Felipe Baca
Luis Felipe de Jesús Baca (1828–1874) was an American farmer, rancher, and politician. He founded the city of Trinidad in the state of Colorado. Baca County, Colorado is named for him. Biography He was born in Taos, New Mexico in 1828. During the 29 years that he lived there, he became a prosperous farmer and rancher, dedicated mainly to raising sheep. In his hometown he married María Dolores Gonzáles, with whom he had nine children. Founder of Trinidad Baca used to travel to Denver and Santa Fe to sell his produce. In 1860, when he was transporting a shipment of flour, he came across a fertile valley beside the Purgatoire River. Back home, he examined the land's potential for farming and grazing. In the fall of that year, he and his family moved to that valley, reclaiming a portion of the lowlands and waiting for spring to plant their first crops. The Fujita scale (F-Scale; ), or Fujita–Pearson scale (FPP scale), is a scale for rating tornado intensity, based primarily on the damage tornadoes inflict on human-built structures and vegetation. The official Fujita scale category is determined by meteorologists and engineers after a ground or aerial damage survey, or both; and depending on the circumstances, ground-swirl patterns ( cycloidal marks), weather radar data, witness testimonies, media reports and damage imagery, as well as photogrammetry or videogrammetry if motion picture recording is available. Colorado State Highway 116
State Highway 116 (SH 116) is a fairly isolated state highway in Colorado that runs from the Kansas state line in the southeastern corner of the state. SH 116's western terminus is at U.S. Route 287 (US 287) and US 385 near Springfield, and the eastern terminus is at W Road 12 at the Kansas state line. Route description The highway gives service though very rural country in Baca County through Two Buttes to the junction with US 287 and US 385 about 7 miles north of Springfield. The highway's maintenance is served by Two Buttes, the only town on its route. The town is the largest town for many miles in any direction.
