Byun (), also often spelled as Byeon or Pyon is a Korean family name. According to the 2015 South Korean census, there were 138,802 people with this family name. It is written with three different hanja. In a study by the National Institute of the Korean Language based on 2007 application data for South Korean passports, it was found that 70.4% of people with this surname spelled it in Latin letters as Byun in their passports, while the rest spelled it with various other romanizations. Byun Hee-bong (; born Byun In-chul; 8 June 1942 – 18 September 2023) was a South Korean film, television and voice actor. In 1963, he embarked on his voice acting career by making his debut in the first season of DBS Donga Broadcasting. He further expanded his experience by joining the second season of MBC Culture Broadcasting in 1965. Making his acting debut in 1970, he was known as director Bong Joon-ho's personal favorite actor, and his performances in the director's films have sparked a fresh wave of recognition for his unique contributions as a supporting actor. Byun Jung-il (born 16 November 1968 in Seoul) is a former South Korean professional boxer. He competed in the men's bantamweight event at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Amateur career At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Byun defeated Jean-Marc Augustin of France in the first round of the bantamweight competition. In the second round, he refused to leave the ring after losing a 4-1 decision to Aleksandar Khristov of Bulgaria. He was penalized two points by New Zealand referee Keith Walker for headbutting.
