Burnham Grammar School
Burnham Grammar School (BGS) is a co-educational grammar school in Burnham, Buckinghamshire. In October 2011 the school became an academy. It takes students aged 11–18, with approximately 1250 on roll (as of 2021/2022). In September 2004 the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) awarded the school specialist school status as a science college. In May 2011 the school applied for academy status in order to be released from local education authority (LEA) control. The school has a vertical tutoring system. The current headteacher is Andrew Gillespie, who took over from Catherine Long in January 2008. Previous to this, he was a teacher of science at the school. Local education authorities (LEAs) were defined in England and Wales as the local councils responsible for education within their jurisdictions. The term was introduced by the Education Act 1902, which transferred education powers from school boards to existing local councils. Science College
Science Colleges were introduced in 2002 as part of the now defunct Specialist Schools Programme (abolished in 2011) in the United Kingdom. The system enabled secondary schools to specialise in certain fields, in this case, science and mathematics. Schools that successfully applied to the Specialist Schools Trust and became Science Colleges received extra funding from this joint private sector and government scheme. Science Colleges act as a local point of reference for other schools and businesses in the area, with an emphasis on promoting science within the community.
