Burin-Grand Bank is a provincial electoral district (Canada), electoral district in Newfoundland and Labrador represented by a member in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. It was contested for the first time in the 2015 Newfoundland and Labrador general election, 2015 provincial election. The district was created out of all of Grand Bank (electoral district), Grand Bank and parts of Burin-Placentia West and Bellevue (electoral district), Bellevue. The district contains a ferry serving St. Pierre and Miquelon, which is part of France, via a port in Fortune, Newfoundland and Labrador, Fortune. The district also contains an intra-provincial ferry serving Rencontre East via Bay L'Argent. Rencontre East
Rencontre East is a small, outport community in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada located north east of Belleoram, and west of Terrenceville in Fortune Bay. The population was 115 in the 2021 census. This small community is not connected to any surrounding areas by road. Rencontre East is accessible by scheduled ferry service (MV Terra Nova) from ports in Pool's Cove (1 hour, 15 minutes) and Bay L'Argent (1 hour, 45 minutes). The MV Terra Nova takes 30 passengers. History The main industry is cod and lobster fishing. Rencontre East was the location of one of only a few molybdenum mines in Canada's history. Burin-Placentia West was a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The district was known as Placentia West prior to 1975. As of 2011 there were 7,673 eligible voters living within the district. Primarily a fishing district with the Marystown Shipyard and offshore fabrication yard an important part of the economy. Like many other districts, it has faced some tough economic times. Production has dropped at OCI's Marystown fish plant and work at the shipyard has been erratic. Grand Bank is a defunct provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Prior to the 1974 redistribution, the district was called Burin. The district was abolished in 2015 and replaced by Burin-Grand Bank. Grand Bank covers the southernmost part of the Burin Peninsula. The fishery, particularly deep-sea activity, has historically driven the economy of towns like Grand Bank, Fortune and Lawn. Mining was once prominent in St. Lawrence area, but no longer. 2015 Newfoundland And Labrador General Election
The 2015 Newfoundland and Labrador general election, held on November 30, 2015, elected members of the 48th General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Progressive Conservative Party which had governed since 2003 election, was defeated by the Liberal Party, which won a majority in the new assembly. The election had been scheduled for October 13, 2015, under Newfoundland and Labrador's House of Assembly Act, mandating a fixed election day on the second Tuesday in October in the fourth calendar year after the previous election. However, the House of Assembly amended the act in June 2015, to delay the election until November 30, 2015, so that the election campaign would not overlap with the federal election scheduled on October 19, 2015.
