''Building a Building'' is a 1933 American animated short film produced by Walt Disney Production and released by United Artists. A remake of the 1928 Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film ''Sky Scrappers'', the cartoon depicts Mickey Mouse working at a construction site under the supervision of Peg-Leg Pete while Minnie Mouse is selling box lunches to the workers. It was directed by David Hand, his first directorial assignment at Disney, and features the voices of Walt Disney as Mickey, Marcellite Garner as Minnie, and Pinto Colvig as Pete. It was the 51st Mickey Mouse short film, and the first of that year. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 6th Academy Awards, but lost to Disney's own ''Three Little Pigs''. David Hand (animator)
David Dodd Hand (January 23, 1900 – October 11, 1986) was an American animator and animation filmmaker known for his work at Walt Disney Productions. He worked on numerous Disney shorts during the 1930s and eventually became supervising director on the animated features ''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'' and ''Bambi''. Biography Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Hand began his animation career working on Max Fleischer's '' Out of the Inkwell'' cartoons throughout the 1920s. He joined the Disney studio in 1930 during a major drive by Disney to recruit from the best of animating talent. Hand immediately made his mark as an animator. By 1932 he was regarded as one of the studio's top animators (despite some complaints that his work was "too mechanical") and had become a close friend of Disney himself. The Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film is an award given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as part of the annual Academy Awards, or Oscars, since the 5th Academy Awards (with different names), covering the year 1931–32, to the present. From 1932 until 1970, the category was known as Short Subjects, Cartoons; and from 1971 to 1973 as Short Subjects, Animated Films. The present title began with the 46th Awards in 1974. During the first 5 decades of the award's existence, awards were presented to the producers of the shorts. Current Academy rules, however, call for the award to be presented to "the individual person most directly responsible for the concept and the creative execution of the film." ''Gulliver Mickey'' is a black and white short cartoon in the ''Mickey Mouse'' series, produced by Walt Disney and released by United Artists in 1934. It was the 66th Mickey Mouse short film to be released, and the fourth of that year. Plot Mickey is first seen reading ''Gulliver's Travels'', the 1726 novel by Jonathan Swift, while the mice orphan children are pretending to be sailors. He then joins in their play by hiding under the rug, pretending to be a whale. After poking Mickey with a fork, causing their "ship" to collapse, the children start to cry. Mickey manages to calm them down by retelling the Liliput sequences of ''Gulliver's Travels'', pretending it was a real event that happened to him by portraying the role of Gulliver. The story ends with Mickey saving the town from a giant spider ( Pete), but after telling the story, one of the children dangles a fake spider attached to a fishing rod, which scares Mickey out of his wits. ''Steamboat Willie'' is a 1928 American animated short film directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. It was produced in black-and-white by Walt Disney Animation Studios and was released by Pat Powers (producer), Pat Powers, under the name of Celebrity Productions. The cartoon is considered the public debut of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, although both appeared months earlier in a test screening of ''Plane Crazy'' and the then unreleased ''The Gallopin' Gaucho''.
