Buangkok is a neighbourhood located in North-East Region, Singapore, north eastern Singapore. The neighbourhood roughly encompasses the Trafalgar and Compassvale subzones of the Hougang and Sengkang Planning Areas respectively, as designated by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, URA. Etymology The namesake road Lorong Buangkok was named ''Buangkok'', meaning "ten thousand countries", after the rubber plantation company Singapore United Rubber Plantations Limited's Chinese name "Multi Nations" (万国) in Teochew. In 1967, a track off Lorong Buangkok was named Lorong Buangkok Kechil. History China, Chinese farmers settled on the land in this vicinity in the early twentieth century. Buangkok MRT Station
Buangkok MRT station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the North East Line (NEL) in Singapore, located near the road intersection of Sengkang Central with Compassvale Bow. The station serves the residential neighbourhood of Buangkok; the Buangkok Bus Interchange; Sengkang Grand Residence and Sengkang Grand Mall, which is a integrated commercial and residential development. The station was first announced in March 1996 and construction began in April 1997. Buangkok station remained closed when the NEL began operations on 20 June 2003, upsetting the area's residents. Despite lobbying by grassroots leaders, the government supported SBS Transit's decision, citing low expected usage that would have made the station a "white elephant". In a display of public dissatisfaction with the government, eight white cardboard elephants were put up when government minister Vivian Balakrishnan visited Punggol South in August 2005. North East MRT Line
The North East Line (NEL) is a high-capacity Mass Rapid Transit (Singapore), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Singapore. Operated by SBS Transit, the line is the MRT's shortest. Kampong Lorong Buangkok
Kampong Lorong Buangkok (alternatively ''Kampung Lorong Buangkok''; Jawi: كامڤوڠ لوروڠ بواڠكوق; ) is a village located in Hougang, Singapore. Built in 1956, it is the last surviving kampong located on Singapore Island in the 21st century. It is situated right beside a canal that drains into the nearby Sungei Punggol. History The kampong was also known as ''Selak Kain'' in Malay, which meant 'hitching up one's sarong (skirt)' as people hitch up their sarongs to wade through floods whenever the village experienced flash floods in the 20th century Singapore. The land which the kampong rests on, was acquired in 1956 from Mr Huang Yu Tu by Sng Teow Koon, a traditional Chinese medicine seller. Hougang () is a planning area and mature residential town located in the North-East Region of Singapore. It is the largest housing estate in Singapore based on land area, and is home to 247,528 residents as of 2018. Hougang planning area is bordered by Sengkang to the north, Ang Mo Kio to the northeast, Geylang to the south, Bedok to the southeast, Toa Payoh to the southwest, Serangoon to the west and Paya Lebar to the east. Compassvale is a neighbourhood of Sengkang New Town, and is located between Rivervale and Anchorvale. Compassvale encompasses the Sengkang Town Centre. History There used to be a few low-rise flats along Punggol Road with a defunct road named Buangkok South Farmway 1 leading into the estate. It was part of a rural centre built by HDB in the late 1970s. These flats were cleared by mid-2000s for further developments in the vicinity. Singaporean Hokkien; Tâi-lô: ; zh, poj=''Sin-ka-pho Hok-kiàn-ōe'' is a local variety of the Hokkien language spoken natively in Singapore. Within Chinese linguistic academic circles, this dialect is known as Singaporean Ban-lam Gu.
