Brunei–United States Relations
Relations between Brunei and the United States date from the 19th century. On 6 April 1845, visited Brunei. The two countries concluded a Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce and Navigation in 1850, which remains in force today. The United States maintained a consulate in Brunei from 1865 to 1867. Diplomatic visits In 2013, President Barack Obama was due to visit Brunei for the ASEAN Summit, however due to shut-down of the United States government, Secretary of State John Kerry replaced Obama. A few months later, the sultan of Brunei went on a state visit to the United States and met Obama. History The United States welcomed Brunei Darussalam's full independence from the United Kingdom on 1 January 1984, and opened an embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan on that date. Dato Serbini Ali
Serbini bin Haji Ali (born 10 April 1955) is Brunei's ambassador to the United States. Education and early career Ali earned a master's degree in law and diplomacy from The Fletcher School at Tufts University. With effect from 13 December 2004, Serbini, the Deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, assumed the role of acting permanent secretary at the Ministry of Health. Diplomatic career Ali started his diplomatic career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1980. Two years later, following his service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he acted as second secretary in the High Commission in Singapore. Cleveland Park
Cleveland Park is a residential neighborhood in the Northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C. It is located at and bounded approximately by Rock Creek Park to the east, Wisconsin and Idaho Avenues to the west, Klingle and Woodley Roads to the south, and Rodman and Tilden Streets to the north. Its main commercial corridor lies along Connecticut Avenue NW, where the eponymous Cleveland Park station of the Washington Metro's Red Line can be found; another commercial corridor lies along Wisconsin Avenue. The Sultan of Brunei is the monarchical head of state of Brunei and head of government in his capacity as prime minister of Brunei. Since independence from the British in 1984, only one sultan has reigned, though the royal institution dates back to the 14th century. The Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF); (ABDB), Jawi script, Jawi: , is the official organisation and collective term for all of the military forces or service branches of the sultanate of Brunei, Brunei Darussalam. The RBAF consists of three primary military branches; the Royal Brunei Land Force (RBLF / TDDB), the Royal Brunei Navy (RBN / TLDB), and the Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF / TUDB). Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) is the capital and largest city of Brunei. It is officially a Municipalities of Brunei, municipal area () with an area of and an estimated population of 100,700 as of 2007.
