Brookline (Pittsburgh)
Brookline is a neighborhood in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It takes its name from the town in Massachusetts, which early settlers felt bore a resemblance to the area. History Early settlement Brookline was a part of the larger West Liberty Borough before its absorption into Pittsburgh in 1908. Early in its history, the area was mostly inhabited by miners and farmers. At the turn of the century, when the mining industry in the area declined, only farms were left. Dawn of the 20th century The dawn of the 20th century brought many technological advances that helped the South Hills of Pittsburgh flourish. Liberty Tunnel
The Liberty Tunnels (also known as the Liberty Tubes) are a pair of tunnels located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States that allow motorists to travel between the South Hills of Pittsburgh and the city, beneath Mt. Washington. The tunnels were vital in the expansion of the South Hills suburbs by providing a direct route to the city, eliminating the time-consuming task of navigating around or over Mt. Baldwin Township is a township in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,984 at the 2020 census, a decrease from the figure of 1,992 tabulated in 2010. Overbrook is a neighborhood on Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's South Hills area. Originally called Fairhaven, the name was changed to Overbrook when breaking away from Baldwin Township to become a borough. Bon Air is a neighborhood in the south portion of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Its two zip codes are 15226 and 15210, and it is represented in the Pittsburgh City Council by the council member for District 4 (South Neighborhoods). Bon Air is small in geographic size compared to the other communities in District 4. It is on a mountaintop, surrounded almost entirely by steep forested mountainsides. Beechview is a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's southwestern side. Dormont is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 8,244 at the 2020 census. It is a residential suburb of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Loosely translated, Dormont means "Mountain of Gold" in French. History The territory in which Dormont Borough is situated was held by the Delaware and Shawnee tribes until 1768, when the territory was part of the transaction in which Fort Stanwix was purchased from the Six Nations. In following years, Dormont's area was part of Cumberland County, Pitt Township in Bedford County, Penn Township in Washington County, and finally, St. Clair Township in Allegheny County in 1788. Pittsburgh Railways
Pittsburgh Railways was one of the predecessors of Pittsburgh Regional Transit. It had 666 PCC streetcar, PCC cars, the third largest fleet in North America (after Toronto Transit Commission, Toronto (745) and Chicago Surface Lines, Chicago (683)). It had 68 streetcar routes, of which only three (until April 5, 2010, the 42 South Hills Village, 42 series, the 47 South Hills Village, 47 series, and 52 Allentown, 52) are used by the Port Authority as Pittsburgh Light Rail, light rail routes. South Hills Junction (PAT Station)
South Hills Junction station is a station on Pittsburgh Regional Transit's light rail network. This station served as the original "merge point" of the inbound Beechview and Overbrook branches of the light rail system, just before the run under Mount Washington through the Mount Washington Transit Tunnel and into downtown Pittsburgh. In 1993 the Overbrook (Blue) Line was shut down for complete reconstruction to serve the modern-day light rail cars. During construction, it was found that a segment of track between the Boggs Ave. stop and South Hills Junction was too narrow for the larger vehicles; this was bypassed with two wide-curved rail ramps built between the Beechview (Red) Line's Palm Garden stop and South Hills Junction where the two branches now merge.
