Breiðamerkursandur
Breiðamerkursandur (, ) is a Glacier, glacial outwash plain in southeast Iceland. The area is mostly sand, although some vegetation is beginning to grow in the area. Breiðamerkursandur is located in the municipality of Hornafjörður. It was formed by the glaciers Breiðamerkurjökull, Fjallsjökull and Hrútárjökull during the last few centuries. As the climate cooled during the little ice age, the glaciers advanced down and out to the lowlands, piling gravel ahead. The glaciers are sources of muddy rivers who commonly change their channels frequently and carry the sediment that the weight of the glacier grinds down and across a large area. The pro glacial lake Jökulsárlón, one of Iceland's best-known tourist attractions, is located on Breiðamerkursandur. Jökulsárlón Lagoon In Southeastern Iceland
Jökulsárlón (; translates to "glacial river lagoon") is a large glacial lake in southern part of Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. Situated at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, it developed into a lake after the glacier started receding in the late 19th century. The lake has grown since then at varying rates because of melting of the glaciers. The glacial front is now about away from the ocean's edge and the lake covers an area of about . In 2009 it was reported to be the deepest lake in Iceland, at over , as glacial retreat extended its boundaries. The size of the lake has increased fourfold since the 1970s. The lake can be seen from Route 1 between Höfn and Skaftafell. It appears as "a ghostly procession of luminous blue icebergs". Breiðamerkurjökull
Breiðamerkurjökull (, ) is an outlet glacier of the larger glacier of Vatnajökull and a piedmont glacier in the southern part of Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. Emerging as a tongue of the Vatnajökull, it ends in two lagoons, famous Jökulsárlón and smaller and less known Breiðárlón. Over time, it has gradually been breaking down. As the icebergs break away from the tongue of the glacier, they drift slowly to the mouth of the lagoon and eventually join the ocean. They are stated to float in the deep lagoon for 5 years, which is around deep and spreads over an area of . It was near the ring road until 35 years ago before retreating rapidly and forming the Jökulsárlón lagoon. The high Breiðamerkurfjall mountain was enclosed by the Breiðamerkurjökull and Fjallsjökull before the drifting started and formed the Breiðárlón lagoon, which is not as dramatic as the Jökulsárlón lagoon. A glacier (; or ) is a persistent body of dense ice, a form of rock, that is constantly moving downhill under its own weight. Outwash Plain
An outwash plain, also called a sandur (plural: ''sandurs''), sandr or sandar, is a plain formed of glaciofluvial deposits due to meltwater outwash at the glacier terminus, terminus of a glacier. As it flows, the glacier grinds the underlying rock surface and carries the debris along. The meltwater at the snout of the glacier deposits its load of sediment over the outwash plain, with larger boulders being deposited near the terminal moraine, and smaller particles travelling further before being deposited. Sandurs are common in Iceland where geothermal activity accelerates the melting of ice flows and the deposition of sediment by meltwater. Vatnajökull ( Icelandic pronunciation: , literally "Glacier of Lakes"; sometimes translated as Vatna Glacier in English) is the largest and most voluminous ice cap in Iceland, and the second largest in area in Europe after the Severny Island ice cap of Novaya Zemlya. It is in the south-east of the island, covering approximately 10% of the country.
