Bosque County
Bosque County ( ) is a county located in the greater Waco area. The county sits just northwest of Waco in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 18,235. Its county seat is Meridian, while Clifton is the largest city and the cultural/financial center of the county. The county is named for the Bosque River, which runs through the center of the county north to south. The Brazos River makes up the eastern border, along with the Lake Whitney reservoir it feeds. Since 2015, Bosque County has been represented in the Texas House of Representatives by Republican DeWayne Burns. The previous 10-year representative was Republican Rob Orr of Burleson. History In 1721, while traveling from San Antonio de Béxar to a mission in East Texas, the Marqués de San Miguel de Aguayo ventured north from the Old San Antonio Road, and camped along the Brazos River. Bosque River
The Bosque River ( ) is a long river in Central Texas fed by four primary branches. The longest branch, the North Bosque, forms near Stephenville, and flows toward Waco through Hamilton, Bosque and McLennan counties. It is subsequently joined by the East Bosque in Bosque County and the Middle and South Bosque Rivers near Waco. The river terminates into the Brazos River, and is dammed nearby to form Lake Waco. The Middle Bosque River adjoins the Prairie Chapel Ranch home of President George W. Bush northwest of Crawford, Texas. Recent controversy The city of Waco has been involved in a protracted lawsuit with Erath County dairies since 2004. The city alleges that the dairies have been negligent in allowing excess phosphorus from cattle waste to enter the river in large quantities, traveling downstream and causing algae blooms in Lake Waco. Texan Santa Fe Expedition
The Texan Santa Fe Expedition was a failed commercial and military expedition in 1841 by the Republic of Texas with the objective of competing with the lucrative trade conducted over the Santa Fe Trail and the ulterior motive of annexing to Texas the eastern one-half of New Mexico, then a province of Mexico. The expedition was unofficially initiated by the president of Texas, Mirabeau B. Lamar. The initiative was a major component of Lamar's ambitious plan to turn the fledgling republic into a continental power, which the president believed had to be achieved as quickly as possible to stave off the growing movement demanding the annexation of Texas to the United States. Lamar's administration had already started courting the New Mexicans, sending out a commissioner in 1840. Many Texans believed that the New Mexicans would be favorable to the idea of joining the Republic of Texas. The expedition was a failure. Coryell County, Texas
Coryell County ( ) is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 83,093. The county seat is Gatesville. The county is named for James Coryell, a frontiersman and Texas Ranger who was killed by Caddo Indians. Coryell County is part of the Killeen–Temple metropolitan statistical area. History Habitation of Coryell County dates as far back as 4500 BC. The Tonkawa, Lipan Apache, Kiowa, and Comanche were among the tribes who migrated through the area at various periods. When the General Colonization Law went into effect in 1824, followed by the 1825 State Colonization Law of Coahuila y Tejas, Robert Leftwich obtained a grant to settle 800 families in Texas. The county is named for George Washington Hill, secretary of war and secretary of the navy under the Republic of Texas. Johnson County, Texas
Johnson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 179,927. Its county seat is Cleburne. Johnson County is named for Colonel Middleton Tate Johnson Sr., a Texas Ranger, politician and soldier in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War (fighting for the Confederate States Army). Johnson County is included in the Dallas–Fort Worth– Arlington metropolitan statistical area. History The first settler of Johnson County was Henry Briden, who built a log cabin on the Nolan River in 1849. Somervell County is a county on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 9,205. Its county seat is Glen Rose. The county is named for Alexander Somervell, secretary of war for the Republic of Texas. Somervell County is included in the Granbury micropolitan area. The county contains the Comanche Peak Nuclear Generating Station, one of two nuclear power plants in Texas. State Highway 174 (SH 174) is a state highway in Texas that connects Meridian and Burleson. Route description SH 174 begins in Bosque County at an intersection with SH 22 in Meridian. The route travels northward out of the city and through Morgan. It briefly enters Hill County, passing to the north of Lake Whitney and the town of Blum, before crossing into Johnson County. Heading north into Cleburne, SH 174 has agreement with SH 171 and FM 4 through the city's downtown, where the routes cross Bus. US 67. After separating from SH 171 and FM 4, SH 174 has an interchange with the US 67 expressway before heading northward out of the city. State Highway 144 (SH 144) is a state highway in Bosque, Somervell, and Hood counties in Texas, United States, that runs from Meridian to Granbury. Route description SH 144 begins at an intersection with SH 22 in Meridian. The route travels northwest to Walnut Springs before turning in a more northerly direction. It enters Glen Rose, where it has a one-mile concurrency with US 67. After separating from US 67, the highway resumes its northward journey to Granbury, where it intersects the US 377 bypass. State Highway 22 (SH 22) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Texas that travels from Corsicana to Hamilton in the north central part of the state. History SH 22 was one of the 25 original state highways proposed on June 21, 1917, along a path from Wichita Falls to Comanche. On August 18, 1917, plans had been extended from Comanche eastward to Hillsboro. On September 10, 1917, plans had been extended from Hillsboro eastward to Nacogdoches. On March 17, 1919, SH 22 was extended to Logansport.
