Bisgaardia
Bisgaardia is a genus of Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacteria in the family Pasteurellaceae. The genus was first described in 2011 following the isolation of '' Bisgaardia hudsonensis'' from marine mammals, including narwhals (''Monodon monoceros'') and beluga whales (''Delphinapterus leucas''). A second species, '' Bisgaardia miroungae'', was later described from the oral cavity of a northern elephant seal (''Mirounga angustirostris''). Etymology The genus name Bisgaardia honors Danish microbiologist Morten Bisgaard for his contributions to the taxonomy of the family Pasteurellaceae. The Pasteurellaceae comprise a large family of Gram-negative bacteria. Most members live as commensals on mucosal surfaces of birds and mammals, especially in the upper respiratory tract. Pasteurellaceae are typically rod-shaped, and are a notable group of facultative anaerobes. Their biochemical characteristics can be distinguished from the related Enterobacteriaceae by the presence of oxidase, and from most other similar bacteria by the absence of flagella.
