Birzeit University
Birzeit University () is a public university in the West Bank, Palestine, registered by the Palestinian Ministry of Social Affairs as a charitable organization. It is accredited by the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education and located in the outskirts of Birzeit, near Ramallah. Established in 1924 as an elementary school for girls, Birzeit became a university in 1975. Birzeit University offers graduate and undergraduate programs in information technology, engineering, sciences, social policy, arts, law, nursing, pharmacy, health sciences, economics, and management. It has 9 faculties, including a graduate faculty. These offer 76 Bachelor of Arts programs for undergraduate students and 39 Master of Arts programs for graduate students. Talal Shahwan
Talal Rebhi Abd-Allah Shahwan (May 28, 1968) is a chemist, and a Palestinian university professor. He was appointed as president of Birzeit University from August 1, 2023. Biography Talal Shahwan was born on May 28, 1968, in Jordan, from a Palestinian family from the town of Hableh in the province of Qalqilya. He acquired his high school degree in the scientific stream from Al Saadya high school in 1986 from the city of Qalqilya. He studied in Birzeit University but the Israeli lockdown of the university during the first Intifada stopped him from continuing his studies. He later moved to Turkey and acquired his bachelor's degree in Chemical engineering, Chemical Engineering from the Middle East Technical University in 1994. He then acquired his Master's degree, master's degree in 1997 and doctorate in 2000 from Bilkent University. Birzeit University Closures
Birzeit University is a public university in the West Bank, Palestine. As a frequent centre of Palestinian nationalism, there has been clashes between its students and Israel Defense Forces. It has been forcibly closed by the Israeli military fifteen times between 1973 and 1992. Mahmoud Darwish
Mahmoud Darwish (; 13 March 1941 – 9 August 2008) was a Palestinians, Palestinian poet and author who was regarded as Palestine's national poet. In 1988 Darwish wrote the Palestinian Declaration of Independence, which was the formal declaration for the creation of a State of Palestine. Darwish won numerous awards for his works. In his poetic works, Darwish explored Palestine as a metaphor for the loss of Garden of Eden, Eden, birth and resurrection, and the anguish of dispossession and exile. He has been described as incarnating and reflecting "the tradition of the political poet in Islam, the man of action whose action is poetry." Vera Tamari
Vera Tamari (; born 1945) is a Palestinian visual artist, art historian, curator and educator. She is known for artwork in ceramics, sculpture, painting, and installation art. Tamari taught at Birzeit University for many years. She founded the Birzeit Museum of Ethnography and Art. Tamari lives in Ramallah, West Bank. Renowned for her multidisciplinary practice, Tamari has significantly contributed to the development of contemporary Palestinian art through her innovative use of materials and commitment to cultural preservation. Tawfiq Canaan
Tawfiq Canaan () (24 September 1882 – 15 January 1964) was a pioneering Palestinian physician, medical researcher, ethnographer, and Palestinian nationalist. Born in Beit Jala during the rule of the Ottoman Empire, he served as a medical officer in the Ottoman army during World War I. During British rule, he served as the first President of the Palestine Arab Medical Association founded in 1944, and as the director of several Jerusalem area hospitals before, during, and after the 1948 war. Over the course of his medical career, he authored more than thirty-seven studies on topics including tropical medicine, bacteriology, malaria, tuberculosis, and health conditions in Palestine, and contributed to research that led to a cure for leprosy. Palestinian Costumes
Palestinian traditional clothing are the types of clothing historically and sometimes still presently worn by Palestinians. Foreign travelers to Palestine in the 19th and early 20th centuries often commented on the rich variety of the costumes worn, particularly by the fellaheen or village women. Many of the handcrafted garments were richly embroidered and the creation and maintenance of these items played a significant role in the lives of the region's women. Though experts in the field trace the origins of Palestinian costumes to ancient times, there are no surviving clothing artifacts from this early period against which the modern items might be definitively compared.
