Bill Snow
William Snow otherwise known as Bill or Billy was an anti-smoking activist, a co-founder of BUGA UP (Billboard Utilising Graffitists Against Unhealthy Promotions) and contributor to the banning of tobacco advertising and the realisation of a smoke-free environment in Australia. In addition to his anti-smoking activities, he was an avid campaigner against nuclear weapons and destruction of the environment and was a strong supporter of Aboriginal Rights. Bill died of a ruptured aorta on 8 March, 2018. He is survived by his daughter Emily and his sisters Dorothy and Joan. Early life Bill was born on 31 January 1938, the youngest of Alison and Lyall Snow's three children. He grew up in Drummoyne and attended Fort Street High School where he won an award for debating and graduated with the leaving certificate. Rolo Mestman Tapier (1 July 1945 – 3 December 2007) otherwise known as Lord Bloody Wog Rolo was an activism, activist and colourful eccentric Sydney identity. He initially achieved notoriety for his anti-monarchist statements and activities and became one of the early members of Billboard Utilising Graffitists Against Unhealthy Promotions, BUGAUP (Billboard Utilising Graffitists Against Unhealthy Promotions). His provocative and sometimes confrontational manner, particularly with police, saw him detained or arrested on minor charges a number of times. Burnum Burnum
Burnum Burnum (10 January 1936 – 17 August 1997) was an Aboriginal Australian sportsman, activist, actor, and author. He was a Woiworrung and Yorta Yorta man at Wallaga Lake in southern New South Wales. He was originally christened Harry Penrith but in 1976, he changed his name to Burnum Burnum ("Great Warrior") after his grandfather both to honor him and acknowledge his Aboriginal identity. Billboard Utilising Graffitists Against Unhealthy Promotions, or B.U.G.A.U.P. (" bugger up") is an Australian subvertising artistic movement. It practices billboard hijacking using détournement or modification with graffiti of such billboard advertising that promotes something that is deemed unhealthy. History The movement started in inner-city Sydney in October 1979, later spreading to Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide and Perth. It has been active ever since, although its peak of activity was in the late 1970s and early-mid 1980s. Many of the members came from professional and university-educated backgrounds. A founding member was Bill Snow, who first started to alter tobacco billboards with graffiti, and continued to be active in anti- smoking and littering campaigns. Simon Chapman (academic)
Simon Fenton Chapman, AO (born 14 December 1951) is an Australian academic and tobacco control activist. Life and career Chapman was born in Bowral, New South Wales to Margaret and Alec Chapman who had emigrated from England in 1948. He is an Emeritus Professor in Public Health at the University of Sydney. In his PhD in social medicine he examined the semiotics of cigarette advertising. He has authored 21 books and major reports, 338 papers and editorials, and 198 letters and commentaries in peer reviewed journals. Chapman is a regular writer on public health matters in leading Australian newspapers and blogs, having written some 470 opinion page and journalistic articles since 1981. His main research interests are in tobacco control, media discourses on health and illness, and risk communication.
