Beverly Noa
Beverly Kauiokanahele Noa (June 14, 1933October 19, 2017) was a Hawaiian hula dancer. Noa was the 1952 winner of the Miss Hawaii contest and was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame in 2014. Early years and career Beverly Kathleen Rivera was born June 14, 1933, in Los Angeles, California. Her parents were Benny Rivera and Victoria Miller. She was raised in Honolulu and graduated from Farrington High School. Beverly was introduced to hula by her teacher Louise Beamer when she was six years old, and she would later study with the renowned artist ʻIolani Luahine. At age eighteen she was crowned Miss Hawaii 1952 and competed in the 1953 Miss America contest, where she placed in the top ten. She began her career as a featured dancer at the well-known Waikiki bar Don the Beachcomber. Hawaiian tourism expert Robert C. Hula
Hula () is a Hawaiian dance form accompanied by chant (oli) or song ( mele). It was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Native Hawaiians who originally settled there. The hula dramatizes or portrays the words of the oli or mele in a visual dance form. There are many sub-styles of hula, with the main two categories being Hula ʻAuana and Hula Kahiko. Ancient hula, as performed before Western encounters with Hawaii, is called ''kahiko''. It is accompanied by chant and traditional instruments. Hula, as it evolved under Western influence in the 19th and 20th centuries, is called ''auana'' (a word that means "to wander" or "drift"). Poi (food)
Poi is a traditional staple food in the Polynesian diet, made from taro. Traditional poi is produced by mashing cooked starch on a wooden pounding board, with a carved pestle made from basalt, calcite, coral or wood. Modern methods use an industrial food processor to produce large quantities for retail distribution. Water is added to the starch during mashing, and again just before eating, to achieve the desired consistency, which can range from highly viscous to liquid. In Hawaii, this is classified as either "one-finger", "two-finger", or "three-finger", alluding to how many fingers are required to scoop it up (the thicker the poi, the fewer fingers required to scoop a sufficient mouthful). Poi can be eaten immediately, when fresh and sweet, or left to ferment and become sour, developing a smell reminiscent of plain yoghurt. Kāhala, Hawaii
Kāhala, is a neighborhood in Honolulu, Hawaii. Kahala contains a large concentration of expensive real estate and beachfront properties, which include some of the most expensive in the entire state. Kahala consists of approximately 1,200 homes. The neighborhood is considered a “cinderella story” because it went from farmland to one of the nicest neighborhoods on Oahu. Kahala is also home to the Kahala Hotel & Resort, formerly known as the Kahala Mandarin Oriental, and prior to the Kahala Hilton. Ed Kenney
Edward Kamanaloha Kenney, Jr. (August 8, 1933 – October 5, 2018) was an American singer and actor from Hawaii best known for the role of "Wang Ta" in the original Broadway production of ''Flower Drum Song.'' Hawaii Calls
''Hawaii Calls'' was a radio program broadcast live from Waikiki Beach from 1935 through 1975 that reached 750 stations world-wide at the height of its popularity. It featured live Hawaiian music by an 11-piece dance orchestra conducted by Harry Owens, the composer of "Sweet Leilani". The show selected the best musicians and singers, with the purpose of showcasing what authentic Hawaiian music is like when played by native performers, but with one major difference—the lyrics were sung in English and intended for white audiences. Miss Hawaii
The Miss Hawaii competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the State of Hawaii in the Miss America pageant, and the name of the title held by that winner. Hawaii first competed at Miss America in 1948 and has twice won the Miss America title, in 1992 and 2001. The current Miss Hawaii is Lauren Teruya of Honolulu who was crowned on May 14, 2022, at the Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu.
