Belarus–Poland Border Barrier
On 25 January 2022, Poland began building a border wall on the border with Belarus to prevent illegal immigration in the aftermath of the Belarus–European Union border crisis. Construction Poland began work on the 5.5-meter (18 foot) high steel wall topped with barbed wire at a cost of around 1.6 billion zł (US$407m) aimed at blocking the passage of illegal migrants during the border crisis in the region artificially instigated by Belarus in the late summer of 2021. The barrier was completed on 30 June 2022. An electronic barrier 206km in length, mounting 3,000 cameras with night vision and movement sensors, was added to the fence between November 2022 and early summer 2023 at a cost of EUR 71.8 million. 2023 Polish Referendum
A referendum was held in Poland on 15 October 2023, taking place alongside the 2023 Polish parliamentary election, nationwide elections to the Senate and Sejm. Four questions had been announced by members of the government from 11 to 14 August. Voters were asked whether they approve of the Privatization, privatisation of state-owned enterprises, an increase in the retirement age, the admission of immigrants under the European Union, EU relocation mechanism, and the removal of Belarus–Poland border barrier, the barrier on Poland's border with Belarus. The referendum was boycotted by the main opposition parties resulting in a turnout of only 40% (compared to more than 70% for the election). As a result of not exceeding the minimum validity threshold of 50% turnout, the results were not legally binding, making the referendum an example of a successful no-show strategy. Terespol
Terespol (; ) is a border town in eastern Poland on the border with Belarus. It lies on the border river Bug, directly opposite the city of Brest, Belarus. It has 5,794 inhabitants as of 2014. Overview Since 1999 Terespol has been within Biała Podlaska County in Lublin Voivodeship. Between 1975 and 1998 it belonged to Biała Podlaska Voivodeship. The town is a busy border crossing between Poland and Belarus on the European route E30 which links Berlin-Warsaw-Minsk-Moscow. Another crossing into Brest is located at Kukuryki northwest of Terespol. There was also a local train between Brest and Terespol. It comes 3 times a day. The trip took 18 minutes and was a very comfortable way of crossing border between Belarus and Poland. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the train was cancelled at the beginning of 2020 and has been suspended for an indefinite period. Belarus–Poland Relations
The Republic of Poland and the Republic of Belarus established diplomatic relations on 2 March 1992. Poland was one of the first countries to recognise Belarusian independence. Podlaskie Voivodeship ( ) is a voivodeship in northeastern Poland.
