Battelle, Alabama
Battelle is an Unincorporated area#United States, unincorporated community in DeKalb County, Alabama, DeKalb County, Alabama, United States. Battelle was once a thriving mining community which was spread in a north – south line along the foot of Lookout Mountain five miles north of Valley Head, Alabama. At the beginning of the 20th century, Battelle included hundreds of houses, a school, a commissary, a hotel and post office, in addition to the furnace and coke ovens. Battelle had a water system with water from a spring that was pumped into a large wooden tank and then piped into the surrounding homes. Mining prospectors found pockets of a fairly good grade of iron ore, coal and limestone, all the ingredients for making pig iron. Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park
Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park is a metropolitan park in Central Ohio, owned and operated by Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks. The park is within the Pleasant and Prairie townships, southwest of Columbus. It is the largest park in the Metro Parks system, with . The park encompasses lands and creek beds north & south of the confluence of the Big & Little Darby Creeks. Unique features include restored tallgrass prairie areas totalling that house a group of 10 American bison, a large nature center with exhibits about the exceptional biodiversity of Big Darby Creek, and a Fort Ancient mound. Ann Battelle (born January 18, 1968) is a world champion and World Cup champion on the U.S. Ski Team; she competed in the freestyle skiing events of moguls and dual moguls. Early years Former U.S. National Champion and World Cup Champion, Olympian, and Olympic Freestyle pioneer Ann Battelle was born in New York, and raised outside Burlington, Vermont. Annie Maude Norton Battelle
Annie Maude Norton Battelle (January 26, 1865 - March 23, 1925) was a suffragette and philanthropist. Battelle, a Republican, became very active politically after the death of her husband in 1918. She was at protester at the Republican National Convention in 1920 to lobby for endorsement of women’s suffrage before a presidential nomination was made. She was president of the Women's Republican Club of Ohio as well as a delegate at large to the Republican National Convention of 1924. She was also an Honorary founding member of The Junior League of Columbus, established in 1923. The Battelles had been friends with Warren and Florence Harding and Battelle headed up the women's bureau at Harding's election headquarters. Ebenezer Battle
Captain Ebenezer Battle, also known as Ebenezer Battelle, represented Dedham, Massachusetts in the Great and General Court. He was also a selectman in 1779. Battle fought the retreating British soldiers following the battles of Lexington and Concord. One of his men, Elias Haven, died at Menotomy in the vicinity of the Jason Russell House. After the fighting ended, his men walked the entire length of the battlefield, collecting weapons and burying the dead. Ebenezer Battelle (1754–1815) was an American Revolutionary War veteran, a bookseller in Boston, Massachusetts, and a settler of Marietta, Ohio, in the late 18th century. Life in Dedham Battelle was born in 1754 in Dedham, Massachusetts, to Ebenezer Battle (d.1776) and Prudence Draper. Gordon Battelle (November 14, 1814 – August 7, 1862) was a Methodist minister, educator, abolitionist, chaplain and one of the founders of the state of West Virginia during the American Civil War. Early life and education Born in Newport, Washington County, Ohio on November 14, 1814, to Ebenezer Battelle and his wife Mary (Molly) Greene Battelle, Gordon Battelle had both older and younger brothers and sisters. He attended the Marietta Collegiate Institute (now Marietta College) in his Ohio county's seat, where he met fellow student Francis Pierpont, who became his lifelong friend. Battelle then continued his education (for Christian ministry) at Allegheny College at Meadville, Pennsylvania, graduating with the highest rank in his class and receiving a B.A. degree in 1840.
