Bastro
Bastro was an American post-hardcore band which was active in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band's main line-up consisted of David Grubbs on guitar, Clark Johnson on bass guitar, and John McEntire on drums. The band also experimented with use of piano, organ and ''musique concrète'' compositions, foreshadowing McEntire's and Grubbs' subsequent musical projects. History Bastro was formed by Louisville, Kentucky guitarist David Grubbs after his former band Squirrel Bait folded in 1987. Grubbs had moved to Washington, D.C. to attend Georgetown University where he started an early version of Bastro with bassist Dan Treado, who soon left. Grubbs' hometown friend Clark Johnson, who'd played bass in Squirrel Bait, joined Grubbs, and the duo recorded the six-song EP ''Rode Hard & Put Up Wet'', backed by a drum machine and engineered by Steve Albini for Homestead Records in 1988. David Grubbs
David Grubbs (born September 21, 1967) is an American composer, guitarist, pianist, and vocalist. He was a founding member of Squirrel Bait, Bastro, and Gastr del Sol. He has also played in Codeine (band), Codeine, The Red Krayola, Bitch Magnet and The Wingdale Community Singers. Music career Grubbs' first band was a brief-lived punk rock, punk/new wave music, new wave group called The Happy Cadavers that released the four-song 7" record ''With Illustrations'' in 1982. Grubbs then formed a hardcore punk band called Squirrelbait Youth that later evolved into the influential Louisville, Kentucky group Squirrel Bait, releasing a 12" EP and an album on Homestead Records. The Serpentine Similar
''The Serpentine Similar'' is the debut studio album by American indie rock band Gastr del Sol, released on June 1, 1993, by TeenBeat Records. The album was re-released by Drag City on June 16, 1997. Background Guitarist David Grubbs and drummer John McEntire had played together in the post-hardcore band Bastro with bassist Clark Johnson. When Johnson left Bastro in 1991 to attend law school, Bundy K. Brown joined and the group began writing new material, later documented as the instrumental live album ''Antlers: Live 1991''. These songs were then reworked as quieter, acoustic versions for ''The Serpentine Similar'' as Bastro became Gastr del Sol. Squirrel Bait
Squirrel Bait was an American punk rock band from Louisville, Kentucky active from 1983 to 1988. Squirrel Bait's dense, moody, melodic hardcore sound, featuring pronounced tempo shifts, foreshadowed the grunge sound of the late 1980s as well as math rock. Squirrel Bait, along with Hüsker Dü, are often noted as precursors to the emocore ("emotional hardcore") sound that arose from the D.C. hardcore punk scene with bands like Rites of Spring, Beefeater and Fugazi. Gastr Del Sol
Gastr del Sol (derived from a combination of the name of a race horse (Gato del Sol) and David Grubbs' previous band Bastro) was an American, Chicago-based band, consisting for most of their career of David Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke. Between 1993 and 1998 they released seven albums ranging in genre from post-rock (the scene they were most associated with) to musique concrète. Early line-up Grubbs, a former member of Squirrel Bait formed the band in Chicago in 1991 from the final line-up of the group Bastro, with Bundy K. John McEntire
John McEntire (born April 9, 1970) is an American recording engineer, producer, drummer, and multi-instrumentalist, based in Chicago, Illinois. He is a member of both Tortoise and the Sea and Cake. Early life McEntire was born on April 9, 1970, in Portland, Oregon. He started playing drums at age 10. Throughout high school, he performed in marching bands and studied privately for seven years. He went on to attend Oberlin Conservatory initially as a percussion major, but eventually switched to study in the school's then newly created program for Technology in Music and Related Arts. Musical career While attending Oberlin, McEntire briefly played with Mark Edwards in My Dad Is Dead in 1988, and then joined Bastro with David Grubbs and Bundy K. Brown in 1989. Skag Heaven
''Skag Heaven'' is the only full-length studio album by the American punk rock band Squirrel Bait. It was released in 1987 through Homestead Records. Squirrel Bait disbanded after the album's release and the band's members went on to form Slint, Bastro and a number of other influential indie and post-rock bands. Background After the release of their eponymous EP, guitarist David Grubbs and bassist Clark Johnson went off to college, providing an obstacle for the band to rehearse or work on new material together. When Grubbs and Johnson returned for the summer, Squirrel Bait went on tour, supporting Sonic Youth, the Descendents, and Volcano Suns in various cities around the U.S. The tour was also a road test for their new songs that would comprise a new album. Codeine (band)
Codeine is an American indie rock band formed in 1989 in New York City. They released two full-length albums—''Frigid Stars LP'' in 1990 and ''The White Birch (album), The White Birch'' in 1994. Although the group broke up in 1994 shortly after the release of ''The White Birch'', their subdued and melancholic style helped pioneer the then-nascent slowcore subgenre of indie rock. Bitch Magnet
Bitch Magnet was an American post-hardcore band who formed in 1986 at Oberlin College in Ohio and later moved to North Carolina. History Bitch Magnet released their first record in 1988. All of the band's albums were released on Communion Records in the US; they were also signed to the European labels Shigaku/What Goes On and Glitterhouse. The band disbanded in 1991. On March 31, 2011, Bitch Magnet announced that the line-up of Fine, Morfin and Park - the band's original recorded line-up - would reunite to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival "Nightmare Before Christmas," held in the UK in December 2011. In addition to performing at ATP, the band also played shows in London, Brussels, Cologne and in the Netherlands at Groningen's Vera club. Philip David Ochs (; December 19, 1940 – April 9, 1976) was an American songwriter, protest song, protest singer (or, as he preferred, "topical singer"), and Political Activist, political activist. Ochs was known for his sharp wit, sardonic humor, and political commentary. He wrote approximately 200 songs throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and released eight albums. Brian Paulson
Brian Paulson is an American record producer and audio engineer from Minnesota, best known for recording albums by Slint, Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Superchunk and Wilco. Paulson grew up in Bemidji, Minnesota, but moved about 200 miles south to Minneapolis after graduating from high school and started playing with Man Sized Action, which released two records, ''Claustrophobia'' and ''Five Story Garage'' on Bob Mould's Reflex Records label. He made many friends in the Chicago-Minneapolis musical pipeline, touring with reputable recording engineer Steve Albini. Through Albini, Paulson met David Grubbs and eventually worked with him on an album for his band, Bastro. Post-hardcore
Post-hardcore is a punk rock music genre that maintains the aggression and intensity of hardcore punk but emphasizes a greater degree of creative expression. Like the term " post-punk", the term "post-hardcore" has been applied to a broad constellation of groups. Initially taking inspiration from post-punk and noise rock, post-hardcore began in the 1980s with bands like Hüsker Dü and Minutemen. The genre expanded in the 1980s and 1990s with releases by bands from cities which had established hardcore scenes, such as Fugazi from Washington, D.C. as well as groups such as Big Black, Jawbox, Quicksand, and Shellac who stuck closer to post-hardcore's noise rock roots. Dischord Records became a major nexus of post-hardcore during this period. My Dad Is Dead
My Dad Is Dead was a recording project of musician Mark Edwards. The project began in Cleveland, Ohio in 1984. My Dad Is Dead released twelve full-length albums before it officially ended in 2011. A new group called Secular Joy was formed later that year in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. History Mark Edwards first played drums during the very early portion of the 1980s, performing in the bands Thermos of Happiness and Riot Architecture before they both dissolved by 1984. In August that same year, Edwards began to learn guitar and started to write music under the name of My Dad Is Dead. Early live shows consisted of him performing guitar and vocals with percussion duties done by a drum machine. Edwards’ name for his project was a nod to both of his parents having died by the time he was 24 years old.
