Basketball In Lebanon
Basketball is one of the most popular sports in Lebanon. The Lebanese Basketball Federation FLB is a member of the Asian federation FIBA Asia and international federation FIBA and also a member of the Arab Basketball Federation. History The first time basketball was played was in the mid of 1920's.The Lebanon national basketball team has qualified three consecutive times to the FIBA World Championship in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2023. The Lebanese national basketball team won the 2010 FIBA Asia Stanković Cup on its home court. They are ranked 24th in the world. The women national team is ranked 61st in the world and currently plays Level I in the FIBA Asia Championship for Women . The Lebanese u-19 national team participated in the 2007 FIBA Under-19 World Championship where they placed 14th. Elie Mechantaf
Elie Mechantaf (; born in Beirut, Lebanon on October 5, 1970) is a retired Lebanese professional basketball player. He started his basketball career in the Cypriot Basketball League, before becoming the captain of the Lebanese Hekmeh BC (Sagesse) basketball club, winning the Lebanese Championship for 6 consecutive seasons from 1998 to 2004. Mechantaf was also the team captain of the Lebanon National Basketball Team from 2000 to 2006, also taking part in the 2002 FIBA World Championship in Indianapolis. He retired in 2008. Now Mchantaf is encouraging basketball in Lebanon through founding his own official club M13 (Mchantaf #13 ). Career Mechantaf was born in Abra (East Saida), the son of Rafiq and Samia Mechantaf. Matt Freije
Matthew Wayne Freije (born October 2, 1981) is a Lebanese/ American former professional basketball player. Freije attended Shawnee Mission West High School in Overland Park, Kansas before attending Vanderbilt University where he was an All-SEC performer. He was selected 53rd overall in the 2004 NBA draft by the Miami Heat, was then released and later played for the New Orleans Hornets. He played 19 games for the Atlanta Hawks during the 2006–07 season but was waived in December 2006 to clear a roster spot for Slava Medvedenko. Rony Boulos Fahed (born November 6, 1981, in Achrafieh, Lebanon) is a Lebanese professional basketball player. Brian Beshara
Brian Anthony Beshara (Feghali) (born 30 December 1977) is a former Lebanese basketball player. Beshara was also a member of the Lebanese national basketball team. At 6'8", he was Lebanon's starting forward and played an important role on both the offensive and defensive sides. Ali Mahmoud (), sometimes nicknamed Ali Mack, is a Lebanese-Canadian professional basketball player for Beirut Club of the Lebanese Basketball League (LBL). Career Mahmoud was born on May 28, 1983, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, to Toufic and Gina Mahmoud, Lebanese Shia Muslims who had immigrated to Canada. He played with St. Patrick's High School Fighting Irish 1999 to 2002 and for one academic year, in 2002-2003, in University of Ottawa Gee-Gees. Jean Abdelnour
Jean Abdelnour (, born 29 November 1983) is a Lebanon, Lebanese former basketball player. He had a successful 2002–03 season with Ghazir which led him to be signed by the Blue Stars (Lebanon), Bluestars for the 2003–04 season. He stayed with the Blue Stars (Lebanon), Bluestars until the 2008–09 season where he was the leading Lebanese scorer on the team averaging 16 ppg and 7.4 rpg. After the season finished Blue Stars (Lebanon), Bluestars dropped from the first division, and Abdelnour subsequently signed a 4-year contract with Sporting Al Riyadi Beirut. Joseph Vogel (; born September 15, 1973) is an American-Lebanese former basketball player. Vogel attended Colorado State University. Upon graduation, he was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in 1996. He played as a professional in Taiwan, Turkey, Japan, Saudi Arabia and on a number of Lebanese basketball teams, including Sagesse Beirut, Champville SC and Sporting Al Riyadi Beirut. After his naturalization as a Lebanese citizen, he also became a member of the Lebanese national basketball team. At 6'11", he was Lebanon's starting center. College Vogel attended Colorado State and was ranked second in blocked shots with 180 and 7th all time in games played, with 115 to his credit. Ronald Fred Seikaly (born May 10, 1965) is a Lebanese-American former professional basketball player. He was one of the first internationally born players to make an impact on American basketball. Fadi El Khatib
Fadi El Khatib (; born 1 January 1979), nicknamed the "Lebanese Tiger", and "Abu Jihad" is a Lebanese basketball player for Sagesse SC of the Lebanese Basketball League. El Khatib played for several teams in the Lebanese Basketball League, and also played abroad in Syria, Ukraine and China. He was also a member of the Lebanon national team that finished runners-up in the FIBA Asia Championship three times, in 2001, 2005 and 2007.
